Been doing a lot of research across the HD 3500’s, including Ford’s too, only the 7.3 variant however, but still not sold on that 10spd action.

Had pretty much decided was going to go with gas for simplicity, but now having serious second thoughts to just go with a SO Cummins and be done with it since we live around 5k elevation and pull through the mtns here in the West and this is for just a 5er puller (9-15k), not a DD, despite the fact I can’t stand the extra emission complexities and some nuisances (idling and shorter trips not ideal), and yes a few more bucks up front. Plus, when you have a 12v, you appreciate torque and the mileage over longer distances.

Either way, as far as a few specifics go, had a few questions some of you might know more about.

1: The TSB for fixing the A/C to be colder on the ‘21’s, seems like some mixed results, some still complaining, etc. Do we know for any certainty that the ‘22s will have this fixed for good, or still strong chance the AC system could be a weaker performer compared to the competition. I simply will not own a vehicle with subpar A/C. My better half will kill me.

2: CP3 pump will remain on the 22’s?

3: Chances Ram will up power output on the Hemi in ’22 or ’23 and or come up with a larger displacement Hemi in ’23, based off similar design currently? No one wants to be a guinea pig.

4: When Ram puts the 5th gen cab on in ’23 or whatever, are we talking wider seats too you think, or same size seating and just a slightly wider interior aspects? Super comfortable seats are critical for us.

5: Can you really get the tailgate release function on the key fobs if you specify this when you order, on the Big Horns that is?

6: When ordering, can the dealer upgrade Big Horn wheels to the Limited Longhorn’s wheels? Not a fan of the Laramie upgrade wheels whatsoever.

Thanks all…

For Ram, looking only at Big Horn and Limited Longhorns trims, either SO Cummins\Hemi. The Laramie interior options, not loving that as much.

In these times I do not believe anyone can predict anything with any certainty. Too many variables in play.

Yes, that's pretty clear the days we live in, yup.

Anyone else have any understanding or knowledge of any of those by chance, some are already known by folks who may have done some of these things with the dealer...

I have never understood people putting that much effort in research, pick the one you would rather drive and go for it they can all either be bad apples or outlive christ no matter what logo is on the truck, ram has the best diesel and ride it has always be the easy decision for me

1) nobody can possibly answer that question until a bunch of people have physical access to 2022s. Even then, the way people perceive temperature feel varies widely, so you need to have a bunch of people do scientific testing with thermometers under the same ambient temperature conditions across the different model years.
2) most likely, but that is only an educated guess.
3) for 2022, no. For future model years, nobody can possibly answer that without speculating.
4) another question nobody can possibly answer without speculating. For comparison, the 5th gen DT cab is not wider, neither are the seats, but the cab is 4” longer.
5) no, not as part of a factory configuration, but you could probably work out something with the salesman to order you a spare fob with the button, and program it for you as part of the truck sale/deal.
6) no

It's an 80k plus purchase, that's why.

Appreciate the candid responses. Will wait to see what happens then. Thanks.....

My point is all that research is pointless as every brand has lemons find the one that feels best while driving and get the options you want on it

Yes, fully aware of lemons and understand that. And there are ways of handling those if I were to get the FNS (Friday Night Special). Just speaking to the intended expectations, that's all. Some of these items will need to just wait and see as many of you have directly stated, and if what I'm looking for becomes reality, great.

"Feels" is way too subjective to me. That only pertains to the way it might drive in basic terms, or how the interior looks and feels, for example. Other aspects are more definitive and have an expected outcome.

Another example. I would prefer an 8 speed on the CTD. Right, ok, sounds like I'd need to obviously wait until they release that or a 10 speed. However, the 68RFE through its many iterations, and lifecycles is now fairly reliable, given stock levels, and works well with the 3.73s. I don't think I'm giving up too much in getting the 68RFE over a brand new first year tranny release in the near future. Now, with the gas, yes the 8 speed is ideal to me for proper spread, and that ZF they use since '19+ 6.4s are working great from the info I've seen.

Anyhow, I am quite content with what my current truck does, for what it is, however I'm missing the interior room now that I'm married and pull a 5er around, safety features, some modern amenities, and 4wd could come in handy. Otherwise, I'm giving up some reliability most likely on these new more complicated vehicles, and I will pay quite a bit out of pocket to do that, so I think it's fair to research a bit before feeling which one is best (to me), that's all.

Again, appreciate the feedback,

Similar boat. I’ve been researching and waiting for 1.5 years now. Mine is a pure want play. My 2006 does fine for what I need. Just looking for more comfort, more power to make towing even easier, warranty.

Have learned you just need to have patience waiting for things to play out that may force your hand. Depends on what you’re waiting to learn and if you could buy off the lot or want to order the perfect truck then you’re bound by Ram’s ordering schedule deadlines. For me waiting meant I avoided the CP4 and gained UConnect 5 which I was hoping for. If I wait for a 2023 what might that buy me? At this point I don’t know since there’s barely any info out about them but looks like they are 99% same as 21s.

I’ve read the refresh isn’t until 2024. But probably anyone who really knows is not going to put anything definitive on a public forum. Will Ram simply make the 1500 5th gen cab into an HD version? Again, who knows. Go drive a 1500 and see if it’s worth waiting to see how Ram implements it in the HDs. I want to know when they’ll switch because I want the mega cab again and I suspect it will end once they go to the 5th gen Crew cab.

If the new trans comes with the refresh then I’d have to decide mega cab or more speeds. I’d probably opt for mega cab since I have a 4 spd now so get 50% more with a 22!

I have come to the conclusion that you can overthink things. Doing your homework is a good thing but it can get to be an obsession if you are not careful. I have found in my younger years I did things and lived with my decisions. As I got older it seems I had to rethink things many times. Just turned 65 and ordered a new 2022 2500 Megacab CTD. Did do my homework but was beating myself up if it was right thing to do. Just did it!

So damn true!!!! Glad it’s just not me!

Edit: In my defense... spending $80k on a truck though is worth thinking through a bit, and I'm known to not make rash decisions.

DougB, all great points and thanks for sharing. Having the '06, some would say, is a pretty good place to be these days, in terms of value and simplicity.

clotagames: Yes, I can get carried away with research for sure, and it's not always ideal. However, on occasion there is a detail or two which is pretty critical to the overall liking of something. And if one of those variables falls so short and it literally sours the taste of the truck, I'll defer and either wait it out or choose an alternative option that works to meet the goals. Seems right now, with all the options currently, there's not an exact truck I really want.

Going to absolutely wait for the final '22 info and pricing to come out across Ram and Ford, and if still not onboard, will just wait another year or potentially mid year refresh for things that might pop up too. I wouldn't mind seeing an 8 speed hopefully behind the Cummins as an option and MDS as an option to be removed from the build spec on the 6.4's along with bringing back the gear lever. Just pains me to use a "dial" on a big truck. Even the little things.....got to use and see it, so might as well like it.

I have a 2019 hemi which has the knob. I was a bit taken back by the knob at first, but I’ve actually become quite fond of it.

Agreed. All this new tech sounds nice on the surface but getting in and figuring it all out and operating it while driving takes some skill. Hopefully, it'll just take seat time to get accustomed to it all. The short test drive you get with a dealer doesn't do much but make you realize the learning curve is quite steep on many new features. Ironic because my younger self loved all the new tech, now it's harder to pick as quickly.

Exactly my feelings, too.
