Help me decide... oh, and hi!

The fender?!?

I have a 12" C on the back window!

I'm one of "those" guys. :D
It’s ok to be a fan boi. its also ok to buy a cummins just because you want one. It’s also ok to buy a heavy duty truck that isn’t a diesel.

the reality is that the cummins / hemi gap has closed substantially and anybody who tows less than 10-12k lbs really would be no worse off or maybe even better off with the hemi.

If you don’t tow heavy and want to “justify” the cummins over the hemi you can’t really do it. cummins is $10k more, only gets 3-4 mpg better than the hemi while consuming fuel that costs more and consuming (lots) of def at the same time. You’ll never ever break even.

That being said, you don’t have to justify sh*t to anyone just buy the truck you want.

Once you go back you never go back. Go with your heart's desire. You have always wanted that Cummins and it is right there in your grasp. Plus I see you have kids in your avatar. They will be so proud their dad bought a real truck being shaked by a Cummins. Well, they really don't shake as much anymore but you get my drift. When the kids are in school and bragging about dad's truck no other kid will be able to top it as your truck will be at the top of the pyramid. Oh wait, I forgot you are in San Francisco. Worry, Tesla and Prius have ya beat. Just like down here in SoCal.

Good luck with the choice. I am sure you will be happy with either! I vote diesel..... or TRX

Welcome to the forum.

Actually not super relevant... I'm willing to fly to Texas or Colorado or Idaho to buy a truck and drive it home. Seems like a great way to get some early highway break-in miles!
I just got back from driving from San Antonio, TX to Huntsville, AL and I noted that almost all of the dealerships we drove by were low on HD truck inventory. If you're looking around Texas I'd recommend Dallas/Fort Worth or Houston.

Also, go with the Cummins.

Good, fair post..

The better way to go if you arent towing much is the gasser. They are a MUCH better daily driver IMO. My 2016 cummins 2500 drove like total ass daily due to the dead pedal and slow-to-wind-up turbo diesel. In daily traffic, the MUCH better throttle response of the gas motor is a huge improvement in that experience.

Towing... the tables completely flip IMO--Ive towed with enough large cube gas motors to know that i heavily prefer a torquey diesel while towing---BUT--- to all the diesel guys (myself included), how much do you REALLY tow each year? Unless you use your truck for work, probably not much if youre being truthful.

I have been able to get paid to tow a couple of trailers locally. Have a couple of friends that need to move equipment trailers and need additional trucks to do so. So i make enough to make a truck payment in a few hours. I also have now move 3 RVs for folks becaue not that many folks have 5th wheel hitches.

I bought my 2020 RAM 3500 Tradesman CC LB dually diesel to pull my current camper, and the next one that will be between 15-20k. The side work is an unexpected bonus.

Nice! I dont know that i'd ever charge friends to use my truck .. maybe have them buy a few gallons of diesel, but thats it..

As for the other work youve done (moving RVs around town), how do you advertise?

Lol do it for the kids

Haha, I’m not in SF, I’m about 30 minutes East.

Whereabouts? I'm in the East Bay / Tri-Valley region. I have the 2500 Limited CTD and absolutely love it. No regrets at all. Came from a 2017 1500 Laramie which I loved but this is way better. Tows like a dream, plenty of room and I could care less if the diesel was 9K more or return on money, it's the truck I wanted and the truck I got and the permanent grin is so worth it!

On the flip side; Mine is a daily driver and I have no complaints, never experienced dead pedal or turbo lag. Only difference for me was adjusting to the different power band, if I put my foot into it it goes without any hesitation at all. I'm happy with it and this is coming off of a 2017 1500 Hemi w/ 3.92s. I towed 5000 miles last year and expect to double that this year.

3.73s help, as does the 19+ programming. My 2016 2500 had 3.42s and a confused 68rfe. Truck was a turd.

Surely, you jest. With double the torque and at just off idle vs at the moon towing is not even in the same hemisphere. If you like listening to your engine scream at 4k+ while pulling out of a stop light on a flat road well, ok, I guess.

When's the last time you put 10k on an ISB and drug it up a 6%? Let's not get carried away with the Hemi hyperbole now. There's a reason the big D is $10k more. There's a reason its more expensive overall. There's a very legendary reason the Cummins get's the respect it gets. A 400tq gasser isn't in the same league as diesels from 10+ years ago when it comes to dragging things.

I lol'd at this post.

I'll say... with that beginner trailer, you should have bought a Nissan Frontier... no need for a Hemi or a Cummins!

You guys are killing me, too many fanbois on both sides. I was hoping you guys would make my decision easier, not harder. Guess I should have known the gas be diesel debate would come up.

Okay, so let’s forget diesel vs gas for a bit… how about pros/cons of the Power Wagon 75th Anniversary vs a regular 2500 Limited Crew Cab?

Walnut Creek, but hopefully somewhere much further from San Francisco in the next few years.

Welcome to the forum.

Think of the kids! :) The boys are 3 and 1, so it’ll be a few years before they can drive, but my 3 year old is definitely excited about daddy getting a truck!

Oh, and I considered a TRX… honestly didn’t like it. They had one at a nearby dealership about a month ago and it looked too much like a race car and not enough like a truck. And the bed was so little.

Pro is that the PW has a hemi

All BS aside 6.4 or 6.7 will do anything you need it to like rock said. There's plenty of validity to the annoyance of diesel. Regens, suspect emissions system durability long term...etc.

75th PW vs Limited is 75th no question. It's not even the same truck. Don't be fooled by the glittery gadgets on the interior, the PW has legit lockers and ability to go places you shouldn't take a 7,000lb truck. The resale value will always be higher on something like a 75th edition PW I would imagine. It has an extra card up the sleeve a standard 6.4 won't as far as ability plus the special edition thing.

You really have to figure out what you want to do with the truck long term. Pull a tripple axle 5er toy hauler? Diesel. Overland monster? PW. City truck and haul the occasional weekend duty? Limited.

The biggest con against the PW is going to be its payload capacity. All that suspension travel comes at the price of payload rating.
