Plug In for cold temps

block heaters work only at a certain temperature and if I remember correctly it won't do anything until 0 F

My 2014 EcoDiesel came with a block heater installed, just needed to buy the cord. Do the 2019 2500 Cummins come with the block heater already installed?

all cummins comes with the heater installed in the block.

To be clear, yes all have the block heater installed, but not all come with the cord option...

^ that is incorrect. a block heater will work regardless of temps, if you plug it in. ambient temps will be what limits the performance.

I keep mine plugged into a smart plug that is run by my home automation to turn on/off at specific temps.

I did some cost analysis back in the day when the topic of all night plugged in vs a timer was hotly contested and it cost $.13 a night for an all nighter. ill usually plug mine in around midnight and I'm off to the office by 6am.

The cost to plug in overnight is greatly overshadowed by having to wait for your truck to warm up, or even worse having to replace batteries because you keep surging them down too low with grid heaters pulsing on / off.

Don’t plug in and enjoy not having your heated seat when you go into low voltage mode.

Really you dont need to plug it in i never plugged in any of my old cummins trucks and always had 15w40 they would start in -45c problem free, that being said its really hard on em to start them that cold as a mechanic i have seen spun bearings from that kind of cold start. My 2019 cummins starts really good at -20c (coldest we have had yet) i will be plugging it in at anything below -10c as i get older i have learned to enjoy the instant heat in the winter

Guys, a question. I know our trucks "will start" in the cold. However, when it gets below 20deg I like to have the oil warmed up - as a mechanic I think anything I can do to help prevent wear and damage on those bearings, etc is worth it.

Anyway, have a '20 2500 Bighorn Sport 6.7 CC SWB. I installed the cord on the block heater. I was "planning" to use the "Voltsafe" setup https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085W5RJ4P/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s03?ie=UTF8&psc=1

However, I also have the front parking or whatever sensors, and I installed the Baja Designs 20" hidden light bar in the lower grill.

Problem is, with the "active grill" (or whatever it's called) you can't really just shove a cable through the grill. So, the "Voltsafe" thing is out. I can't run the cable anywhere in the front lower grill because of the sensors and the light bar.

Any suggestions? I'm kind of scratching my head right about now.

Just put it like the factory one it can be pulled out from the lower valence and when done just tuck it back up

I know I could do that. But then I've got that plug getting salt covered and grungy. I really liked the idea of a covered plug like I used to have on the '04. I REALLY like the idea of the Voltsafe thing, so nothing but magnets if somebody forgot to disconnect....

My oem one has a cover for it and i have dielectric grease on it, the magnet idea is neat... i dont let my wife drive my truck so i dont need to worry about it being forgotten lol, i would prefer to have it the way my wife's car is with a little spring loaded door and a 4 ft cable that plugs in to it

What does the OEM cover look like?

This is what i am planning on using on mine, when my plow is on the original cord is in a bad spot to hook up so this should solve that

I just put this on mine you can do it too without hurting the sensors or look of the truck, in the picture with the plow you can see it nicely off to the side and weather tight

I bought a 250w stick on oil pan heater for my truck. Less engine wear, faster warm up, I’ve installed them on all my 5.9 L trucks previously. Heat rises BTW.
