Oil Consumption

Been a few miles since I posted here. Now at 23500 miles - no consumption between oil changes

I don't see how they can say that's normal! Losing a quart every 2,500 miles is normal? I call BS on that. I've got over 16,000 miles on mine now, four oil changes (the first at 500 miles just 'cuz) without a perceptible loss of ANY oil.

If you're losing 1qt/2,500 miles, how much was lost after your 500 miles 'test' - 1/5 of a quart? I'd recommend taking your truck to another dealer, print out the msgs on this board from folks who have zero oil loss and become a squeaky wheel.

Dont quote me on this but iirc, its 1qt for every 1000 miles under a certain mileage is considered acceptable. If that is true, i guess its "normal" o_O.
But i do plan to try another dealership to see what they say.

A lot of manufacturers are saying that now because of oil consumption issues and angry customers. Kia/Hyundai guys come to mind.

So an engine with a near 60% oil loss (57.14% to be exact) every 4,000 miles (less distance than between oil changes!) is acceptable, eh? What a garbage motor that would be. No one would buy a rig with that crappy of an engine in it. Even if its only, "under a certain mileage". During my near 70yrs on this planet I've had two vehicles that lost oil that bad. One was a 1960 VW bug that I had stripped the drain plug, the other a 1958 Ford sedan V8 with blown rings. None of those two were 'acceptable', but back then no one cared. Gas was $0.32/gallon and cigarettes were $.40/pack from the machine in every gas station lobby. Ah the good old days.....

30k with no oil consumption

How can this be "normal" when my beater has 240k on the engine and doesn't use a drop. Any noticeable consumption should not be normal. Sounds like the oil retention rings and piston rings have some serious quality control issues or people assembling the engine.

Update:
Truck now has 23,450 miles and consuming far less oil. Used about 1/4 quart in 3000 miles.

I changed the PCV valve and threw in a can of engine flush. Still using PUP with Mopar filters

New here, my 2024 6.4 was below the “add” mark at 1,600 miles(first time I decided to check the dipstick). This really surprised and scared me. Added 1qt to get it within safe range. I decided to change the oil and filter today with 7 qts Mobil 1 Euro 0w-40 at 1,800miles. I’ll look out if it consumes that much again this time.

0 consumption until lifters started wearing out around 180K, now probably 1 qt + every oil change. I kind of expect some usage at around 200K. But at low mileage I dont buy it as necessary.

At 47k mine uses about 1/4 - 1/2 a quart over a 5000 mile oil change interval. Not enough for me to be concerned as that's normal blow by and evaporative loss.

What kind of oil are you guys using, to get that kind of oil loss?? I have a 2018 Wrangler that would consume approx 1 quart every 5k miles. It used 0w-20, full synth. A while back I switched to a heavier 5w-30 full synth, and it has been fine ever since.
Recently GM has quietly encouraged owners of their gas trucks to switch from 0w-20 to 0w-40 oil to solve several issues, including bearing issues. The lower weight oil is great for meeting CAFE Standards for mileage, but it is crap for engine longevity.

Oem spec, of course.

Hello All. I'm noticing blue puffs on startups. I don't drive every day and it's a 2021 with 47,000 on it. Lite to no heavy towing. Lots of highway time. Use PUp and Mopar filters and never go below 30% oil life or over 5000k miles. I'm about to monitor the level here every 500 miles, but not happy seeing blue puffs. Its oil in those cylinders or the intake stream. Not happy at all!!!

Assuming this is a 6.4 you are talking about. There is always going to be oil in the intake stream as that's where aerosolized oil gets dumped via the PCV. Generally, should be anyways, very small amounts.

Pull a spark plug and look at the condition. If the insulator is white to light tan it's running fine. If it's dark or black/sooty then it's running rich or burning oil.

Do you drive short distances? Or more highway type of driving? Having worked in a dealer (years ago) we had a few customers that made small commutes that never really got the engine/exhaust hot enough to burn off build up oil/gas from constant cold engines. It caused a bunch of driveability issues. I would take a nice long drive (a few hundred miles) and don't be shy once in a while (like merging onto the highway) with the throttle. Sounds like it needs a romp with the skinny pedal to clear it out. Typical the scenario I'm imagining would be black smoke, but sometimes the colors aren't clear. Just my $.02

So I have 61000 miles on my truck and I know it is due for another oil change as I am dropping it off at the dealer this coming Tuesday. But yesterday, I remote started the engine and while I was walking up to it I heard the rockers knocking for a few seconds and then it stopped. So I checked my oil level and I noticed that I was below the low level line on the dipstick. Even though the oil is being replaced next week, I still added 2 quarts of oil to make sure it was topped off. I will bring this up to the dealer when I drop it off to see what they say. Hopefully it was just low on oil.

How many miles between oil changes do you usually drive?
