Adding 360 cameras or just a front view

Hey folks,

I have been looking into adding the 360 cameras since my 2024 power wagon did not come with it. The install looks straightforward but long and not easy (and not cheep). I was wondering if it would just be fine to just to a front view camera only. The rational would be much cheeper and easier to wire along with the fact that even with 360 I wont have features like lane keeping or adaptive cruise. Half the point for the 360 would be those added features I would not be able to add.

In terms of use case, it seems the front camera would make parking easier especially parallel in the city. The side view stuff would be cool for trails when its tight, but otherwise I am not sure they would add a lot.

Anyone else had this dilema?

Thanks

My truck came with the 360 camera (but not those other things you mentioned). It honestly was not on my list of options I cared about, but it was equipped on this truck that the dealer wanted to sell me at a price I couldn’t refuse.
That said, I’m absolutely glad it came with it! The front of these trucks has a huge blind spot , especially offroad. The “360” part of it is neat, but I’d say much less useful, more of a party trick than anything. The forward camera is definitely the most important /valuable. If the side camera came on when you put the turn signal , it would be more valiant, but it doesn’t (at least not on my 19)

The 360° camera has nothing to do with lane assist or ACC, those use a separate sensor.

You are able to add lane assist and ACC, but it’s not cheap.

I have the 360 cam and i find it most useful when backing into parking spaces. i can see the parking lines from the birds eye view and its pretty accurate for centering the truck. Having it makes me feel the truck is smaller then it really is.
Front cam definitely more useful.

I also have the 360 cam on my 24 PW. I ordered my truck as the 360 cam was an absolute must-have. The 360 cam is incredibly useful in any tight situation. However, as I found with my Gladiator, the front cam along with the rear cam alone are lifesavers during parking.

Thanks all. I saw the install for the 360 and it is a rather extensive install. I agree it would be nice but between being cheep and cheep on my time, I think I like the idea of the front only. If its tight off-road, I scratch the sides, which I would do anyways. I was looking and it does not seem like this is an OEM Mopar part. Which is strange since its an OEM component. I found this: https://www.camerasource.com/automo...era-kit-for-factory-display-fits-2019-21-ramr
It looks easy enough.
Anyone know of another kit?

Just an FYI - At least on my 2024 with surround view cams, there is an option buried somewhere in the center screen settings for the side cameras to activate when you turn on the turn signal. I also thought it was weird that it had surround view cams but they didn't come on with the turn signals like they do in pretty much every other vehicle with surround cams. Then I found the setting one day while wasting some time looking through all the center screen settings before going into work. I was pretty surprised that it was not "On" as standard. It does work, but it is not perfect. There is a very much noticeable 1-2 second delay between when you activate the turn signal and the camera view pops up on the screen. Personally, I would of liked the camera view to pop up in the dash, but it is what it is. I'll try to remember to find which menu its in and post back.

Maybe on the Uconnect 5. My 2019 runs UC4 which I am fairly certain does not have that function. I would love to be proven wrong

My UC5 doesn’t have that option either.

In order to add just the factory front camera from the surround view camera system, you still need to use the camera processor, and have to change out the rear camera and tailgate handle in order to keep the backup camera functional. The individual front and rear views will work, but the overhead surround view will be all black until all four surround view cameras are present and calibrated.

I just noticed that the PW I am supposed to be getting tomorrow doesn't have the front cam - and frankly - I'm shocked. It's a level 3 truck, and no front cam. Weird. The only options it doesn't have are the lane keep and the 360 camera.

Not weird at all, no 360° camera = no front camera.

I more meant it's a weird spec. Every option you could want with a 79K sticker - but whoever built it didn't want a camera. I'm surprised. Even more surprised since it have a Leer topper on it.

That was a feature added with the new body style update (along with the new mirrors, hood, etc). Older trucks require an aftermarket gizmo to make it work. I would really like to have that on my 2021, but not enough to spend the money and open up the dash to install the gizmo.

360 camera was a must for me. I'm by myself a lot with no spotter. There's no depth perception so you still have to get out sometimes, but it's still very handy on trails. Even parking in tight spaces I use it more than I thought I would.

There was a period where it was not available to order for MY22.

Same, I delayed ordering my 2022 until it was available.

I'm sure I'm not the first who's installed an aftermarket front camera into the grill. It can be a bit fiddly to piece-meal all the parts, but you can do it on the cheap for about $60+ from Amazon. I'd prefer to have the factory option but if you don't you can do it easily enough. Also having the factory Aux switches helps a ton with keeping the camera wiring cleaner.

No factory aux switches on the PW.

But if the truck has a factory CHSML Camera, perhaps that could be relocated to the grille?
