Cp4 injector pump Failure

I have always heard that the CP4 was intended for European diesel fuel and not US diesel fuels. US fuel does not allow the pump to be properly lubricated. Would not adding a additive to the fuel help or not ? I am going to start adding Kleen to mine at every other fill-up.

As a CYA,

I'm recording all fuel receipts in aCar app (fuelly) and using a lubricity fuel treatment at every fill up.

Wow, I am having issue with my 6.4 gasser, and was thinking if I got a buyback I would buy a diesel. Not so sure any answers are right. I have been told that the whole attitude of Chrysler customer relations has changed as of late. Seems like I am not the only one that has basically been told “our responsibility is to fix your truck” even if they have no idea how and are just throwing guesses at it and you get to wait weeks to see if the next guess might fix it or not.

I wish you guys luck.

Edited to add this:
I believe that currently there are no manufacturers that will actually look out for consumers. I wish I was wrong, but not sure I am. I wanted a new truck that was reliable, and now I’m not sure I want any new vehicle.

Wouldn’t the dealer play the “your fuel is contaminated because of additive” card?

And deny, void warranty coverage.

I am on the fence in terms of adding hot shot additive for this reason.

Sounds like I am doomed either way.

Just read the story on a SxS forum of a guy with a 2020 Duramax that went into limp mode for emissions failure. They were marooned at a campground for weeks while GM pulled their pud. Got the truck back and it failed the first day on the road. Marooned again. Two wrongs don't make a right, but if anyone thinks FCA is the only one who treats customers this way you are sadly mistaken.

Fuel receipts (and DEF receipts) are for FCA or the fuel supplier if ever needed. The additive is for my piece of mind.

I'm using XDP. Better lubricity than their approved PS. I'd be very surprised they could find 12 oz of XDP in 50 gals of fuel. I'd also get my own samples before they touched it.

Great point by obtaining your own sample first.

Will look into XDP additives.

Thanks for your wisdom.

Really has me double-thinking about handing over $70K to FCA in the next few weeks. I would love to know just how common it is.

I Can definitely understand. I wish I knew more before I ordered and took ownership. I would of tried working something out with the dealer to swap out for a cp3.

2020 Ram 2500 Megacab bought in March 2020. Had 7200 miles on it when the CP4 took a dump two days ago. I was hauling a 24' car trailer from LA to Las Vegas, when it threw error messages, and lost almost all power - it was slowly getting slower and slower - a bit scary. I was barely able to get it off the freeway. Once I squeaked off the freeway, I was able to find a spot to pull over and turned it off. Engine wouldn't restart. Called a tow company and fortunately a Ram dealer was close by (Victorville) - actually only 3 miles from where I was stranded. They also towed my trailer to the dealer so it was in a safer location for a mere $150 - the tow of the truck was at no charge. Had to Uber to a hotel room for the night, and then got a rental car the next morning. Dropped by the dealer in the morning and they said they might have some idea what was going on by Wednesday! (failure happened on Sunday, spoke with dealer on Monday morning). Drove back home to Las Vegas on Monday (yesterday), and today picked up an Enterprise Ram 2500 truck rental, and drove back to the dealer in Victorville where I left the trailer. Hauled the trailer back home by this evening. Heard from the dealer that it was confirmed as a CP4 failure. I will be handling all communication through a case manager with FCA. The dealer acted like they could care less that my 6 month old truck left me and my family stranded 200 miles from home.20200920_145515.jpg

Typical dealers, they dont give a rip about us. Man my heart goes out to you all. I'm going to be arriving just west of vegas tomorrow for a month long stay and I'm at 7000 miles. Sounds similar, hope you didn't jinx me.Please please keep is posted on what FCA case manager said about it being covered and how they intend to handle it. Were glad that you and family are safe n sound. You just never know, theres not to much worse of a situation to be put in. Come on ram, bought time for a recall before someone gets hurt or worse. This is ridiculous

Yeah, that blows...Dealer should have hooked you up with a replacement truck until it gets repaired. I am sure you will get reimbursed, but the dealer should have stepped up. Get paid back for the trailer tow also.

I heard that maybe the newer Ram/bosch cp4 pump's piston is pinned now so it can't rotate and bind up. Can anyone confirm this?

cp3 conversion kit from industrial injection is really the only alternate choice.

it will void your warranty, no question about that.

I run diesel kleen power service.
What about Ram's new "advanced filtration" they call it. I guess it's not up to snuff? Don't the 2019 and newer trucks have an in tank lift pump from the factory? If a person were to do the cp3 conversion and say the emissions system or the u connect touch screen has problems, would warranty on that be void too?

All Dodge Ram/Ram CTD have come with an in tank lift pump.

I would safely assume a cp3 conversion would forfeit the powertrain warranty. you could always be unscrupulous and swap the pumps out if you have any issues. it's way easier on the '19's and up to take the pump off.

the net of it is, if you can't or don't want the full responsibility of any r&r, whether powertrain, electric, etc..., leave it stock and throw your trust into the dealer network and the corresponding techs that are employed in said network, to take care of you under warrsnty. good luck with any quick turn around on your issues.
