2019 Ram 2500 6.4 squeal at start up / Chirping Noise - merged threads

I test drove a new 2500 6.4 and it had the squeal. Decided not to buy it right when I heard that. Now I'm trying to decide between a superduty or the 2500 with the cummins.

If you're going to need any payload (5th wheel), don't bother with a 2500 diesel truck. Pitiful payload numbers.

Yea i might have to go with a 3500 to get the payload numbers i want. Inventory on those are super low compared to the 2500s though.

Hello All, I have been reading this forum for months to see if the 6.4 Hemi would be a great upgrade to my 1500 4.3L Sierra that has been plagued with transmission issues. Seeing this makes me want to steer away from the RAM 2500 Hemi. Is this that common that all RAM 2500 6.4 have this issue? I know all manufactures have issues, I just want to have to avoid dealing with another vehicle with problems.

FWIW, I don't hear a damned thing when I start up the truck, no squealing, no ticking, no chirping... nada

Sounds like hit or miss. I was going to be placing an order for a 2500 Hemi soon and would suck if it shows up and has the issue. I would walk away and have to go another route.

New member here and howdy to all. Picked up my new '20 2500 Hemi Saturday and same chirps and ticks upon startup. A little embarrassing to say the least. Originally thought it's just a "new truck" and noise will go away. A little worried now. I'm going to follow-up with my dealership and further if necessary. I agree with VENO, as more folks complain maybe they'll find a fix.

My 2020 sounds like a 20 year old truck when it starts up...My wife said the other day "Your truck looks great, but it sounds like a piece of Chit"
I think my 6.4 sounds meaty and muscular. Like it has anRV cam or something

I wish there was enough inventory around me to pick the right configuration with no noise but pickings are slim. Reason I was going to order one but don't want to wait months to get it in, turn the key and hear that noise. I am moving forward with researching other options.

My truck is brand new with 750 miles. Definitely does not sound like the Toyota it replaced. Kind of light squeaking or whining noise at idle, which I have only noticed when walking up to it after using the remote start. But, I can't hear it from the inside and Ram has 10 times the creature comforts, and almost 3 times the capability of my old 2017 Tundra, while getting almost the same gas mileage. I can live with it. My wife says it sounds manly so got that going for me. Ha!

The mighty Toyota definitely had some quirks of its own including a touchscreen from 2005 and cupholders that were too big for a 44oz cup of coffee. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but there is no such thing as a perfect vehicle. I think they are like people, in that, when you find the one, the quirks are can endearing rather than annoying. So Mr Ram, go ahead and chirp at me a little, as long as you keep on running good, keeping me comfortable, and hauling 3100+ pounds down the road safely. That's my $0.02.

I just bought a 2020 and outside don't hear any weird noises but in my garage with the windows down I hear some chirping but when I roll the windows up the chirping goes away....easy fix for me just make sure the windows are up when starting in the garage.

I too have a 2019 6.4L that I bought with 2500 miles on it. I didn't notice the squeaking at first but later I did. I know the noise is coming from the driver side exhaust. When the truck warms the noise goes away. So the first thing that comes to mind is that the doughnut between the manifold and exhaust is causing this. When the doughnut reaches a certain temperature it expands and seals off the leak. I haven't had time to really look into my theory but will soon. An other thought....For those trucks that still squeak after the engine heats up the doughnut maynot fit properly.

Mines just like yours, drivers side, stops abruptly once warmed up.

Hello All,
Here is a video I found of what may be the same noise and it seems to be in sync with the exhaust.
It's comes up around 1:14 - 1:27 on this video.
Then around 21:20 he has the hood open but I don't hear it. So as others say the sound goes away after the 2500 warms up?

I think I narrowed it down to this section of the exhaust pipe. One with the ox sensor and the shield covering below it (don't know what it is and its purpose). The bottom cover appear to be press or welded tight over the exhaust. The bands around the ox sensor are just to hold the heat shield in place. You can see from the one photo looking up from underneath the truck the bottom pipe cover. I think this is what is squeaking and stops when it heat up and expands. 20200915_081443.jpg20200915_081457.jpg

To continue the squeaking could be from the bottom shield or the manifold doughnut. It's really hard to pin point it. I squirted some lucas motor additive around the doughnut connection and around the bottom shield. Started it up and the squeaking was much quieter and stopped sooner. Oiled when truck was cold and then again when after it warmed up. Let it soak a little while......oil smoked and smelled a bit but burned off. I'll try later to use a mechanic's stethoscope to see if that helps to pin point the squeak.

Took mine in to have the dealer check out the morning chirp...They told me it did not do it when they started it up. Had a walk away slowly or I am gonna throw the Service writer through the window moment!
