Failing lifters; how to deal with a dealership.

Well, the time has come for me to join the dreaded lifter failure club, and I had some questions for those who have had to deal with this.

2022 SO, 66k miles on the clock, 1800 hours with about 14% idle time, and zero regen issues. Purchased with 55k on the clock, and have been running annual Oil changes since I never come anywhere near mileage on my OCI.

How have you gone about getting this taken care of at a dealer? I mainly fear that I’m going to bring this thing in, only for a service department to tell me that “nothing is wrong” and send me on my way towards an inevitable failure on the side of a road somewhere.

Any and all insight is appreciated.

Happy New Years to ya all,

Well, you have alot of warranty left for how little you drive it.

Take it to the dealer, have it documented and see what they say. If they have truly failed, then there is no question about it. it will be fixed under the drivetrain warranty. Also contact ramcares if you have concerns. they can press the issue

To your knowledge, are dealers charging diagnostic fees for guys who have been turned away, or is that covered under the warranty as well?

let me ask this, what makes you think your lifters have failed? what are your current symptoms.
Truck used to be whisper quiet, and now whenever the truck idles up, it sounds like there are rocks banging around, and the noise is coming from the drivers side wheel well.

Sounds identical to the other trucks that I have been around that suffered lifter failure, although those pickups were swapped over to the Hamilton kit instead of going the warranty route. Sadly, that isn’t in the cards financially right now for me.

I would say that if you take it to a dealer with a good diesel tech they should be able to confirm your issue by walking up and listening. if they feel it isnt an issue then go home. you have 3-4 years left on warranty. so if you go and they feel its a problem cool. if not send it. just document it, or have them document it.

“Dealer with a good diesel tech” is exactly the problem here in Cheyenne.

Probably end up taking the truck to Wheatland or Laramie. Cowboy dodge here is a Greek tragedy when it comes to the diesel trucks.

No, this is the noise I am experiencing.

I would Bring it in to the service department and get their opinion They should be able to tell you if it will be covered under warranty. If they want to pay for diagnostic have them identify the sound and submit it for warranty and see if it gets approved. They dont need to charge you for diagnostics, Only reason they do that is they only make half rate on warranty. If they will not wave the diagnostic fee find another dealer ship and if that fails you will need to get a hold of Ram care and have them open a appointment for you.
