Erratic tick near turbo 6.7 Cummins

Noticed a tick the other morning that seems to be erratic and is coming from the passenger front side of engine. It manifests once the engine starts to warm up and remains audible once at operating temp. The tick is hardly audible, if at all, at idle. At high idle it is notable and can also be heard when driving on the highway next to a wall etc. it sounds like it is in the vicinity of the turbo/egr cooler. Approx. 9,400 miles on truck currently. No codes (have scan gauge for monitoring) or any other issues. Boost still peaks at 35-36lbs. No drive ability issues seemingly. Did note a coolant smell on occasion but only with hood open and after a longer highway drive. Coolant full and no signs of coolant in oil etc. I do have an oil sample on the way to Cummins lab in Indy. Yes I’m aware it’s under warranty but wanted opinions as to whether anyone else had this occur or have heard this. Thinking it may be an exhaust/egr cooler leak but would think it would be more profound when cold; which it’s not. Thanks in advance.

Ok some have reported that tick from belt driven accessories, one of them being the ac compressor. Also after a fresh (less than 1k miles) oil change they seem to typewriter tick til the oil “breaks in”. Weird, I know.

Thank you for the info, it’s just so weird because I changed the oil the first time with valvoline premium blue extreme 5w40 and it didn’t make this noise. Maybe just a coincidence that I noticed it now.

It may go away. Lots of bad info out there immediately condemning the lifters. They have been an issue but if one collapses it will be repetitive not at random. Though I suppose it has to start somewhere. Drive it, enjoy it, deal with it if the time actually comes. Life’s to short to fret about every little noise.

My 22 has the exact same noise. Currently have 45K and no issues other than the DPF was just replaced under warranty.

Dealer said they heard the noise, attempted to discern where the noise is coming from, and that it may be normal. They said they can’t throw parts at it guessing where it is coming from; which I understand. I said well, it didn’t do it for the first 9,300 miles….they said they documented it for future reference. They told me to continue to drive it because there are no drivability issues and no codes. The tech noted the noise as normal egr function on my invoice.

I had the same concerns, dealership told me the same thing. Figured I should quit chasing ghosts and just drive the hell out of it. I’m at 30k and it runs fine. *knock on wood, lol.

My 2024 has the EXACT same noise and matches your situation identically. Same location near the turbo, and happens when warmed up. Much more noticeable with high idle. And it does it with or without the a/c compressor running. It began at 5,000 miles after I did my first oil change with Amsoil signature series 10w30. I took it to the dealer and had two techs look at it and after hearing the noise and "doing their research" they said it's normal operating noises for a Cummins. Told me the same thing, since there's no drivability issues or codes, just keep driving it.

Very odd, the first time I changed the oil was with valvoline premium blue extreme 5w40. I never heard the noise that entire time. The second oil change I used Mobil Delvac ESP 5w40 and (coincidentally?) noticed it the same day. I’m still just driving it waiting to see what happens. It did quiet some about 800 miles post oil change.

Any updates on how it’s doing after you got more miles on the Mobil oil ?
Have about 2,500 miles on this oci currently. It’s still making the same tick at high idle. There was a period of time where the tick wasn’t as loud, around the time it was at the dealer coincidentally, but it sounds like it did initially. Not that oil should cause this; but, I plan to use Delo xsp 5w40 at the next oil change. Then I will likely go back to valvoline premium blue 5w40. I will update this post.
