Went to my dealer the other day and asked about updating my GPS . He told me $ 300 I thought that was really high and passed . Have any others had this done without being robbed .

Nope this is pretty standard. However, you don't really need to update the map unless you're in an area that is constantly developing and making new roads. I've never updated my maps, and I think there's been 1 or 2 times over the last 10 years of having in-car gps that it couldn't get me to an exact address. Just punch in something nearby and call it good.

On the up side, at least they don't try to charge us a monthly fee to use it like some other truck brands.

Depends what year your truck is. If it’s 2019-2021, you have to pay for the update, and you can get it here and do it yourself:

If your truck is 2022+, they are free, and you can download and install them yourself, and there is a new update every quarter from here:

Pretty normal. Haven’t paid for a gps upgrade with various vehicles in over 10 years. That’s what Waze, google maps and others are for imo.

So I downloaded and extracted to thumb drive without incident. Went to my truck, set the truck to 'run' but didn't start it. Inserted the drive in the USB port and it flashed once or twice. Waited a while but nothing further happened.
I removed the drive, started the truck and inserted the drive. It flashed once or twice but nothing further happened.
I scrolled through several menus but didn't see anything helpful.
I checked the website and the instruction details say the radio must be on and the installation will start automagically. Naturally my "radio" was on, but it was Sirius rather than OTA signal. But I can't really see how that would make a difference. Additionally, even though Sirius was "on" I wasn't getting a signal because the truck was inside the carport.

I'm looking for some guidance from somebody that has successfully updated their 12" 5.0 with Nav. Thanks!

I am having the same problem that you are. It seems the truck is not recognizing the USB. I have no idea why it is not. I reformatted and tried again, but still had the same behavior.

Are you unzipping the file?
Yes.
However, it occurs to me that when files are extracted they often create a folder on the destination drive and place the extracted files in there which means the truck won’t see an executable to act on.
I left my thumb drive in the truck so I’ll get it and verify in the morning.

Well, couldn’t sleep with this on my mind so I went out to the truck and retrieved the thumb drive. Checked and the files are not inside a folder. However I don’t see anything I’d call an executable file, either.
Downloaded again and compared to what I already have and everything matches. I formatted the thumb drive again and copied the newly downloaded and extracted files onto it.
I’ll give it another try in the morning.

I may have figured out the problem. My thumb drive is 64GB and exFAT or NTFS are the only choices to format it in Windows 11. Ram U5 requires FAT32. I downloaded RUFUS and formatted my thumb drive to FAT32 and am now copying the files over to the drive one more time.
If this doesn't work, I'll be going to WalMart today and will pick up a 32GB thumb drive to try.

Well, I committed the sin of changing two things without testing in between.
1. I formatted the 64GB thumb drive to FAT32 using RUFUS
2. I switched from Sirius to an FM radio station (I don't think I've ever played a radio station on this truck!)

Started the truck, selected a radio station and inserted the thumb drive. I could immediately see the U5 was reading the drive which it wasn't doing before. Instructions didn't pop up right away, which made me consider selecting NAV but before I could do that, the instructions did, in fact, pop up.
The truck is now happily updating the maps.

Thank you, @wrvond… Bootlegging things over to a FAT32 was what was required. I was able to update mine just now.

The install tab on this website says to start the engine and then install and says it will take about an hour and the radio must be left on - do you need the engine running for this or just leave it in ACC mode?

I didn’t time the install, and did have the engine running. (Even though I hate having a 6.4 sit at idle) I would guess that it took around 20 minutes. It definitely was not a full 30 minutes.

Regardless of what anyone else says (it might be luck that it took under 30 minutes), always make sure the engine is running when doing a map update.
When the ignition is in the accessory or run position (without engine running), it will automatically turn off in 30 minutes. If the map update is interrupted during its install, you will lose the factory map all together, and it’s a pain recovering from that.

During the install you can still drive the truck, you just won't have any Nav functions available. I drove to a store about 45 minutes away but the install completed before I even got there.
