In the small pleasures in life category, I tried out our new Starlink Mini while driving around in our Ram today. The primary purpose for our Starlink is for when we are in remote areas without cell service. I recently started the Starlink service and had run it from our travel trailer.

Short story short, I put the Starlink Mini on a light blanket on the center of the dash facing up through the windshield and then plugged it into the 115v 400w outlet in the back seat.

It connected quickly and we tested it driving around for a couple of hours. It worked great.

Now I need to research a safer, permanent mounting for the dash.

Nice. We have been looking to purchase the SL mini for when we are camping in our travel trailer. How were your download speeds?

I checked speeds periodically and would guestimate they ranged from about 25 Mbps - 150 Mbps, and were typically in the 60-80 Mbps range. We are in an area with some different obstructions (mostly large rock mountains) and that seems to affect the speed. It was cool that it seemed to hold the data connection for phone calls pretty consistently while we were driving. There were only a couple of times where the calls hung for a few seconds.

Nice - which plan do you have? We have an old round dish but I've been planning to get a mini for camping.
We started with the 50GB/month Roam for $50 and will see how the data usage goes. We are not full time in the RV. We like that we can use it for 1 month and then it turn off if we want until we are ready to use it again.

I’ve done a number of trips with the full size Gen 3 dish mounted over my bed. It’s works great, but does of course require the router and power supply to be in the truck somewhere. It’s great for map downloads on the move, or making phone calls.

The mini is definitely the better way to go now, but if you already have a dish you can use it too.

That is a nice bed rack setup! Could you please share the manufacturers of the racks and starlink rack and storage case?

Thanks!

The tonneau cover is a Retrax XR. The cross bars mounted to it are Rhino Rack HD bars on their quick mount track legs.

The Starlink is a Gen3 with the Starlink Standard Mobility Mount (from Starlink themselves) bolted to two 4’ lengths of half-height SuperStrut, which is attached to the bottom of the HD bars with SuperStrut nuts.

The case is a Harbor Freight “Apache” rifle case with Maxxtracks mounting pins installed through the top. The case holds all my recovery gear so it’s easily accessible even if the bed is full.

A little older thread but I plan on tossing the mini in the bed and plugging it in there. It supposedly will work through a bed cover.

We have starlink mounted on my transfer tank in the bed with a magnetic mount and at speeds of 80 we have no issue staying connected.

The mini on an Amazon suction cup mount just barely fits in the sunroof.
I'd like to see how you implemented that.

Just received an offer to get the Starlink Mini for free. It arrives in Standby mode which is $5.00 per month added to my regular residential bill. I can switch it on to the 50Gb per month or Unlimited plan for half price. I haven't figured out how long the half price deal lasts yet, though.

This has just moved to the very top of my list for TT goodie’s. Can’t say I even knew it was a thing until now. We had toyed with the idea of using the wineguard Wi-Fi that came with our camper but everything we read about it was less than stellar.

Yeah, the Starlink Mini is pretty cool for boondocking. With the built in router it uses about 60 or so watts for a few minutes to get connected and then the wattage drops into the low 20s from then on. It’s just sitting on a little table in the picture but is now on a tripod. We need it to be mobile as there are tree challenges at times, like here there are some towering Doug firs along the Rogue River.

For those buying net new, be aware they auto activate the service from standby if you haven't turned it on within a certain time. May be different if you already have an account.

Also, before you order net new service, get a referral code from another user, you both get one extra month free.

Used to be you could simply pause the Mini, no charge. You can still pause it but now they ding you $5 a month extra. Oh well…we are on one of the Roam plans, $50 for 50GB, seems to be enough.
