Dealership oil change

I took my truck to my local dealer for an oil change yesterday. It is a Chrysler/Jeep dealer, but they do have a full-time diesel mechanic. I've been to this dealership several times and have never had any problems. So, the service guy calls me and tells me that they started my truck with no oil in it and let it run for about a minute. He said that they were going to tear down the bottom end and check the bearings for damage and if they find anything they will replace the whole engine. Me question for the group is this, is 1 minute for running without oil going to cause damage?
 
I would want to be there when they dropped the pan . Look for any metal , have them pull the filter and cut it open . They can tell you anything and do nothing . After they have checked it out I would get an oil analysis after running it a few hundred miles . Document everything !
 
I would be calling Ram care and an attorney. There is no way to know what damage was done. They can inspect all they want but will never know what damage might happen at say 60k miles because of this.

THAT is why I do my own oil changes. I am 76 years old and it is hard work for me but I have spent way too much money on my truck to entrust it to some minimum wage kid on the lube rack. Besides as a licensed mechanic I know what I am doing.

Sorry to hear about this situation OP, sounds like they are going to take care of this potential problem, if they didn't care they wouldn't have told you. Keep us posted.

I would be somewhat skeptical about the one minute. It was probably longer or they would not be tearing down the bottom end.

I would agree, after I'm done with an oil change I let the truck run for longer than 1 minute, probably closer to 5 minutes. Take that time to clean up put tools away.

Dang can't believe there's still dealers that would admit that. Do you have a dash cam or something that made them admit it?

Doubtful it takes a lot longer than one min to lock up an engine. We used to have fun with scrap engines drain the oil and coolant wire the throttle wide open and see how long the go some were 10mins before they locked up most were 8mi s or so
 
OP i would want to see the parts as the bearings are going to be scored pretty good for the crank/cam/rods the lobes on the cam are likely scored. I would be pushing for a NEW engine not a rebuild as there is no way there is no damage to the engine after a full min of run time

That is what they said they were looking for scored bearings. If there are scored bearings they are putting in a new not rebuilt engine.
 
OP is getting a new engine. 100%.

It's bad and they know it. You wouldn't make it 1 mile without turning right around.

A new engine isn't exactly a bad deal though.
