Just finished installing cab lights on my 2020 3500. Putting 15 holes through the roof of my cab was a little unnerving but it had to be done. A 1 ton truck is supposed to have marker lights! Used the standard Mopar kit. I’ll probably play around with LEDs to see if I prefer the brighter output.

I’ve been told by more than one person that a vehicle over 80” wide must display them as an identifier, and that the regulation requires a minimum of three individual bulbs.

Yes. But....looks?.....cause I've had them on all my trucks for mostly fashion. So happy to see most of the HD rams on lots had them when I looked. My budget and timing did not provide me the luxury of being picky. Those mirror lights with marker lights just look great! When I rewire my trailer I think a couple extra marker lights will end up accidentally wired up for those late hauls!

I think I read that they where designed to allow other trucks or vehicles to see them coming through wooded areas at night.

so.... spill the beans on how you managed through the square hole. or did you even need to do that?

I pulled down only the front section of headliner letting it just sag enough to get your hand in there. It did take some time to find the switched 12v power wire. It’s located in a large harness at the passenger kick panel. Took about 2.5 hours total.

2.5 hours sounds impressively short. I would think for 2.5 months about drilling holes in a new truck and chicken out lol

specifically, did you have to cut a square hole as the factory has, or did you find a way around that?

I just followed the instructions that came with the Mopar parts kit. Although the instructions only describe install up to 2012.? I used a “D” drill for the mounting holes and a ⅞” step bit for the bulb sockets. It was all a tight fit. I work in a defense manufacturing facility so tools at hand are perfectly suited for jobs like this.

I wonder if they have a kit for the 2019 and up I like the style of the new clearance lights

They don’t, and probably won’t offer one because of the square holes required for them that the body of the LED driver clips into

Out of the 5 lights, the two outside edged ones are for "width" determination, The center 1 is pretty explanatory, the "center-line" of the vehicle and the two remaining lights are for "height" determination. It was more precise back in the day when these were incorporated into the world of vehicle illumination and D.O.T stuff and carried on to this day and designs.

Hmmm... a wood mortising chisel into sheet metal. That should be interesting, especially trying to get a mortise press on the cab roof. I think I’ll just use a pencil grinder.
