I am new to this forum and to Ram Trucks. I am hoping to see if anyone has some thoughts about what I am experiencing with my 2023 Ram 2500 w/6.4L and 8-speed transmission. When driving the truck without a load, or towing if I accelerate to 60-65 mph at a reasonable pace the transmission does not seem to shift into 8th. The engine runs at or just over 2000 rpm with the cruise on. If I accelerate to say 70-72 mph and then leave the truck coast back to the 60-65 mph range the transmission seems to go into 8th and the engine rpm's are about 1800. I bought the truck used with 2400 miles on it and was wondering if this is normal or if maybe there is a break-in period for the engine or transmission that I need to work through before it will shift into 8th at the lower highway speeds with light loads. The truck has 3.73 gears and is 100% stock. I live in the upper mid-west and highway speeds are in the 60-70 mph range, I do not encounter the higher speeds some states have out west.
Thank you

Normal and not a big deal. 7th is still an OD.

Is it 2wd?

It's the 3.73's .. my 4.10 6.4 Hemi truck goes into 8th gear all the time .. Its based on engine RPM and load ... not speed ..

Trans shift schedule is indirectly based on speed since they use output speed (driveshaft rpm in high range) for the shift schedules.

Thank you everyone for your information. It is all good information to know. To answer Flan's question, it is a 4WD truck. So far very happy with the truck.

I'm going to edit/add to my reply after reading the other post linked at the top of this thread, instead of adding to that thread. My observation based on the fuel mileage screen in the dash is that the truck on level grade with the cruise on will go into ECO mode in 7th gear and the instant mileage is better than if I run up the speed and coast back to let it drop into eighth gear where it never goes into ECO mode at the lower highway speeds we have in our area. I am just going to say again it has only been my "observation" I have not verified the instant mileage readings manually as that would be difficult, I have verified the long-term on a trip we took and it was reasonably close.

Now that I have my actual gear displayed on the dash. It shows that my truck with 4.10 gears shifts into 8th at 53 mph and will hold 8th down to 46 mph.

Are you displaying the gear on your dash by activating the gear limiting buttons on the steering wheel or is there another way to monitor this? Thanks

I used JScan to do it. The gear limiting buttons work, but it cancels MDS.
