So I’m getting a reading I think of about half in the safe zone. I forgot to check when. New but so these burn oil as new?

I just checked mine this morning and it is pretty much still full, after ~ 4,800 miles... Looks very black...

Should neither burn nor make oil.

Diesel oil is black, it's even blacker quicker with EGR systems. Fresh oil change will still look black the first time you start it.

Yeah the black color I get it just seems the new truck is burning oil.

If you’re not sure it was full from day one then top it off and see if it drops again.

Some are reporting some consumption on the new 6.7s. They went to low friction rings in the new engine. Have you towed heavy, or worked the engine hard? Best thing for a Cummins is working hard.

Not really it’s my daily and off road rig. I’m doing a AEV Prospector build but with a Carlie suspension. Lotta highways driving and high speed farm roads out here.

That’s what I’m thinking does anyone know what these are running from factory? None of my dealers here know.

I wouldn't add a thing if it's in the middle of the safe zone. I'd just check it periodically and make sure it's not going lower. At the first oil change you can then decide what oil you want to run.

Got a 2020 in March hasn't used any as far as I can see. About 1600 miles of towing 14000 fifth wheel . Had some serious grades involved also . My 96, 06,and 14 never did either . Also had 5 15 liter cummins engines in Semis they didn't' use oil either . Suffice it to say that if your motor continues to use oil I would get it checked out .

FWIW, I checked mine in the lot @ 7mi on the clock and it was in the same spot (half safe zone)

mine has been burning oil since new. I work it pretty well with a couple road trips to the mountains, horse trailers, and 30ft tandem dual gooseneck with 12k man lift. first oil change it burned just shy of 3 qts in 5k miles. dumped again at 10k and it was 1.5qt low. Im at 16k miles now and have added 2 qts to maintain full mark. dealer is going to continue to do oil changes an monitor and document it. running 5w40 rotella on a 5k change interval....stretching to 7500 from here on out.

I have a brand new 2019 Ram 2500 diesel. The oil was full when I got it. At 7500 miles it was 1.5 quarts low. I topped it off but I'm a little concerned about the idea of waiting until 15,000 miles to change the oil. Any recommendations on the change interval? Especially since it seems to be burning a bit of oil? *Note - no towing yet, just daily driving.

If it were me, I’d just change it, cause it sounds like it would make ya feel better, and then keep an eye on it to make sure it’s not going through anymore oil. There is certainly no harm to be done by giving it an early change. Just being me, I would never do that long of an oil change interval whether it was burning oil or not. But if it is really losing oil that fast, I’d probably take it to get it looked at regardless, unless of course it’s not going through oil anymore.

Follow-up: Had the oil changed by the dealer today (9,348 miles). Mopar filter and Penzoil Platinum Euro 5W40 oil - $200. They said 7500 miles was a better interval than the factory line of 15K. Also said that it is normal to burn a quart of oil every two thousand miles and not to worry about it, just check it regularly. Definitely reducing the change interval to 7500 miles.

Never made oil either. Even with extended idling on occasion.

However, dead dinosaur oil changes twice a year @ under 3K miles per.

FWIW, mine is on the road constantly and has 105,000 miles since January 10th. Oil changes every 15,000, adding a quart every 5,000. Has been this way since new. Cheaper to add oil than take the truck off the road. Compared to my 03, 09, 12 and 16, this 19 makes way more money than a couple of quarts of oil.
