Mid ship fuel tank

Well more power to ya if you undertake the project. I think it will end up being fairly involved, probably more than you might think on the surface.

Switch the draw from the rear tank to the front tank
Numerous fuel line changes and possibly relocate the chassis fuel filter? Not sure.
Add transfer pump to the rear tank
Change some wiring harnesses, assuming the pigtails needed for the front tank aren't already there
Flash the system to make it all work, add gauges to dash, make the existing analog gauge work correctly, etc.

And I've probably missed half of it:)

Wouldn't it be great if Mopar actually offers a kit for this?

I know the harness is there, just gotta find out what all is actually needed. I don’t mind doing it right…..but need to know what I’m doing once I have a full list or understanding…..it will either solidify my decision to add OR make me go another route. Problem I’m having….there’s no info to begin.

I have a deposit in on a truck that only has the 52 gallon tank, so I'm joining you on this quest as my original truck I ordered had dual tanks. I am probably going to go with the transfer flow 50 gallon replacement tank, but I'd prefer to do the OEM plumbing and wiring to get dual gauges on the dash. Plan B would be the transfer flow hardware that transfers the forward tank to the rear tank.

Anyway - I've dug up two used 2020 chassis cabs, one that has dual tanks and one with just the rear tank, and asked over in the parts lookup thread to see if he can give us diagrams for the trucks to try and sort out the difference.

Looking for a Part Number? Must provide VIN (only up to model year 2020 at this time)

Hopefully this works and saves Jimmy's time, he does so much for this community as it is.

I already found a 2022 that has dual tanks, and gave him the vin to both that one and mine so that he could look up the difference. But I haven’t heard from him in weeks. I simply don’t know how to locate information to go further. However…a parts list of what’s needed, I can order that and install with no problem

Yep, understood. The reason why I dug up 2020 trucks is because 01Time's software is only licensed for up to 2020. I'm trying to go an alternative route so we don't have to bug Jimmy.

If he can’t get a list my local dealer is pretty ok….I may just go down there and sit with the parts guy to figure it out…but him lunch or something

01Time is the man, he's already posted the parts lists for each truck in that thread. I'm going to build a spreadsheet to figure out the differences.

Where is that at? I looked and looked before I started this thread! Pm me for an email if you build a spreadsheet

Here's the post with the PDFs:

Scroll up 3 posts from that to see which VIN is which. I'll let you know when I have anything worth sharing.

Here's a first rough swing at what may be needed to add the midship tank.

This definitely needs more work - this is based on 2020 trucks, so there are likely later revisions for many of these parts.

Additionally the rear wiring harness is almost certainly model year specific, and the part # here is discontinued - need to figure out the right harness. Or talk to Jimmy if there is a way to easily build an add on harness. But there does appear to be specific rear chassis harnesses for dual vs. rear fuel tank options.

Some of these things I am just not sure about, it will probably become more obvious once I have my truck and can actually look at it. I have yet to find a good photo/diagram of the back of the chassis cabs from above with the dual tank option.

This is also all based on a 84" CA, I think this isn't even an option for the 60" CA..

Midship fuel tank itself, likely none of this is needed if you'd be using the 50 gallon Transfer Flow Tank:

STRAP, FUEL TANK (22 gal) 5031013AA - qty 1
NUT, HEX FLANGE LOCK M10x1.50 (22 gal) 6104717AA - qty 2
STRAP, FUEL TANK (22 gal) 5031015AA - qty 1
TANK, FUEL (22 gal) 68496625AA - qty 1
SHIELD, FUEL TANK HEAT (22 gal) 5031027AC - qty 1
STUD, DOUBLE ENDED M10x1.50x60.00 6508830AA - qty 2
COVER, ROLLOVER VALVE 52014053AA - qty 1 - if you are using the TF 50 gallon tank it looks to come with it's own rollover valves

Other midship tank parts, probably needed anyway:

HOSE, PURGE (22 gal) 5032258AB - qty 1
FILTER, FUEL VAPOR VENT DIESEL 68164876AA - qty 1
TUBE, FUEL VAPOR 52029544AA - qty 1

Fuel tank filler tube for the midship tank:

TUBE, FUEL FILLER 52121693AF - qty 1
CAP, FUEL FILLER 52013994AB - qty 1
TUBE, FUEL FILLER 5031041AD - qty 1

Rear fuel lines - I am least sure on these parts, I really need to see the whole truck to sort out how the plumbing works.

TUBE, FUEL SUPPLY 5146908AA - qty 1
TUBE, FUEL SUPPLY 68193570AA - qty 1
CLIP, TUBE 3 WAY 68065681AA - qty 1

Fuel pump and sending unit for the midship tank:

COVER, FUEL PUMP ACCESS 52014009AA - qty 1
MODULE KIT, FUEL PUMP/LEVEL KIT (22 gal) 4560227AB - qty 1
O RING, FUEL PUMP AND LEVEL UNIT 55366298AA - qty 1

Finally there is the rear chassis wiring harness. For these 2020 trucks I used in the example, the dual tank (NLL) part number is 68476424AA while the rear tank only (NFH) part number is 68476422AA. Both of these are discontinued and we'd need to figure out the appropriate 2022/2023 harnesses as is appropriate. Or wire up a jumper/overlay harness.

So it's the tank/hardware, the fuel filler, the fuel pump/sender module, some hoses/tubes and the wiring.

The factory 52/22 gallon tanks are an option on the 60" CA trucks.

Looking over your list, don't you need a transfer pump for the rear tank? Maybe I missed it.

Ah right, it's just the TF 50 gallon one needs at least an 84" CA, since it needs the extra length..

Correct, I don't see a transfer pump. I'm still making sense of the plumbing, and I think having an actual truck to look at in (hopefully) a couple weeks will be extremely helpful, but from what I see there's no traditional lift pump like we used to have. Instead each tank has a "normal" in tank pump and sending unit module like a gas vehicle would. They are different for the 22 vs 52 due to the depths of the tanks I am sure, but the dual tank setup appears to use the same module in the 52 gallon as if you just had the 52 gallon alone. The ECU must switch to using that in tank pump in the 52 gallon tank as a transfer pump instead of as a lift pump or whatever you'd want to call it. And then the 22 gallon one takes over the lift pump duties getting fuel up to the CP3.

You are doing all my homework…
And I am grateful!!!

Thanks - soon as my truck shows up in a week or two I hope I can tie up the loose ends.

The good news is even if it's not realistic price-wise or the parts aren't available, TF has a $250 kit which I think just consists of a transfer pump to transfer from the midship to the rear, opposite of factory. I doubt that works with the factory gauge, but I may ask them what the details are on that.

I'm back on this - I have my truck now so I can start to figure out the lines needed. I've been refining a few part numbers as well. I think I will need to bug Jimmy eventually to figure out the rear harness as it's year specific so the 2020 part numbers I came up with don't help, but I'm going to keep poking at that.

I also talked to Transfer Flow and their tank isn't going to work for this application. It isn't entirely clear on their web site (IMHO) but it turns out their 50 gallon midship tank is meant to only be used standalone. So you either have a truck with just the 22 gallon midship tank and you swap it for their 50, or you have a truck with just the 50 rear and need to shorten the frame so you can remove the rear tank and put the 50 gallon mid in instead.

They said if it's swapped for the 22 in a dual tank setup to attempt to get 102 gallons, it throws all kinds of errors in the truck beyond just the DTE. I don't know why that would be but that's a bunch of money to experiment with.

So I'm going to continue to pursue adding the 22 gallon tank as the part prices seem reasonable so far, depending on what that rear wiring harness costs. The tank itself is around $700 and the fuel pump module is $250 or so. Beyond that it's the wiring harness, some hardware and some fuel lines.

More as I have time..

Heck yeah! This is awesome! While your digging into this if you don’t mind, see how much is needed for a 2022…..I am really kinda useless on researching stuff like this, but can install with minimal direction

Mine's a 2022 so that's what I am targeting. Is yours a 84" CA as well?

To be honest I don’t know what 84” CA is….but I’m pretty sure…it’s a 2022, 3500 cab and chassis dual rear wheel, with a flatbed that’s like 9’.

Ah ha, I didn't know it was a 3500. Those only come in 60" CA with the crew cab. Not a problem though, they still offered the dual tank option. Once I figure out a parts list for mine we'll just have to figure out if any of the wiring or fuel lines are different for the shorter chassis length.

Oh and CA = Cab to Axle measurement. A normal long bed pickup is 56" CA, the chassis cab equivalent is 60" CA, and the longer option with the crew cab that I have is 84" CA. Just different wheelbases.

Got ya, like I said the research aspect is not my thing but to have and pile of parts sitting in front of me I can put that in haha. I’m 99% sure it’s still an option to have it on mine but still not 100%
