Recall VB6 - 2019 DJ D2 Diesel Engine Calibration

But under certain moderate acceleration like 6th gear 50mph and about half throttle acceleration to 65mph it seems to have a surge. I watched the boost gauge and you can see it oscillate by about 3-4psi when it's doing it.

I just took my truck out for a quick test with Banks iDash data logging enabled. I started at 50 mph in 6th gear, then I applied half throttle and accelerated to 65 mph. I did this multiple times across a wide range of engine temperatures. The data consistently shows the turbo boost does not surge or dip, but there may be a sampling limitation hiding the surge. The turbo boost data is only being refreshed every second, so we might not notice a surge. I will reach out to Banks and ask if there is a way to get a higher resolution refresh on the turbo boost.

EDIT: The horizontal axis represents 1/10ths of a second.

Nonetheless, I did have an epiphany. It is possible that @Dialed-In and @IronByron are experiencing a little weirdness immediately after the update because the dealership most likely issued the quick-relearn command which tells the truck to forget all learned behaviors and relearn the optimal engine and transmission parameters. I suspect the behaviors will improve over the next 1,000 miles. My truck has about 1,000 miles on it since it was last updated, and everything is working really well.

Thank you for your efforts! I'll keep driving mine as is and continue to monitor. It's much improved from the AG calibration.

My wife asked me pick up some takeout food, so I did another test. I fixed the boost pressure data logging problem by reducing the number of variables I was logging, and I increased the logging frequency to 20 Hz which is the highest frequency supported by the iDash.

I may have reproduced the behavior @Dialed-In described. In my previous experiment, I possibly gave the truck too much throttle. This time, I used a little less throttle, and the data seems to show boost pressure "surging" as much as 1.4 PSI.

I put the raw data on my Google drive if anyone wants to analyze it further.

As you can see, boost pressure is trending upward in general, but it surges downward frequently.

For example, as the truck accelerates from 60.9 MPH to 61.5 MPH, the turbo boost builds from 10.1 PSI to 11.5 PSI. However, as the truck continues to accelerate from 61.5 MPH to 62.8 MPH, the boost goes down from 11.5 PSI to 10.1 PSI (which I highlighted in yellow). This behavior happens frequently, and it may be the surging described by @Dialed-In. I must admit, I don't notice the surging in the seat of my pants or in the engine noise, but the data seems to indicate it may be happening.

Do you have the paperwork the dealer gave you? It should show the firmware version installed after the update. It would be good to confirm you have 52401932AH because maybe you have an even newer version (like 52401932AI) that runs rough like 52401932AG.
Yes I have the paper work they gave me but it has no information on the update or what one it is. Seems like most people are having the same issue and seems like the surge is in 5th gear under load and around 8psi and you can watch it go from 8 to 7psi and back and forth while the surging is accruing. Took it to the dealer today and they claim it’s the torque converter unlocking which I say is a cop out.

That BS easy enough to disprove with a monitor that indicates TC lockup.

Just a WAG but I'm thinking that this is an issue with your tranny or otherwise. Torque converter should be locked up once ya hit 3rd and should stay that way unless you're latched to an ungodly load. I suspect your dealer is flipping you off.

So after reading through the whole thread, I am somewhat distressed. I am new to RAM, coming from Chevy after having several issues with the 6 speed tranny pulling a large 5th wheel. Bought 2019 3500 dually Limited and pulls like a train. Well, it did anyway. Got the ECM flashed and immediately noticed the surging 5-6 gear pulling uphill etc. Same as explained in all the other posts. Called the dealer and of course, they have never heard of the issue. I asked to have them reflash and said they can't do anything about it. I'm in Washington and the flash was for California emissions updates. Had I known that I would have never done it. So I took an absolutely bitchen truck in for the recall and I get an 86 thousand dollar turd in return. Sure hope they get this worked out ASAP.

Have you gone back to the dealer for a diagnosis? They have technical resources they can reach out too if they are having trouble diagnosing the concerns. Feel free to send us a PM with your VIN and more details if you'd like some further assistance.

Yes I did and was told by the service writer that here is nothing they can do until an update is pushed. They cannot go backward and reinstall the previous version I was told. So now what can I do. Sit and wait?

What dealer are you working with? You said you are in Washington state didn't you? I noticed this without even towing anything. We're told to work with the dealerships to resolve but they don't have any info or solutions to provide. FCA says work with the dealer and the dealer says hopefully FCA resolves it. Extremely frustrating!

I’m in California and I’m holding out until registration is due or the flash is done properly. The truck runs great right now and I don’t want to change it.

I had the VB6 update as well as the update on the AISIN transmission and the truck runs great. I pulled a light load the day after and it seemed to work very well. I only have 600 miles on the truck that I bought last November but
the updates seem to have worked very well.

I guess not. Maybe it's a Canadian thing? There's a guy from Canada on another forum that said his update was crap.

I'll test that theory. Gonna bite the bullet in a week or so. The 'Battery Saver' thingamajig has been coming on after almost every cold start for the past month or so. Getting weary of that BS. Hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to the dealer I go. :(

Mine is going in on Tuesday and I will be leaving for a 4hr trip with our 27’ travel trailer Thursday. I84 through NY and PA will put the new revisions to the test. I will update with my impressions.

I towed our 12-13k toy hauler over the cascades last weekend and didn't notice the surging. I do notice it when empty accelerating though. Maybe It's not as noticeable when towing due to the feel of the trailer tugging back and forth over bumps in the road etc. Or it's just not running in the same area of the calibration when towing?
