I’ve talked to several people on the spreadsheet who were able to move the truck forward, just very slowly and with very low power. When the K1 snap ring fails, 1st through 4th are no longer available. 5th and 6th are not affected. So if they are able to drive forward it is with 5th. Some of the failures, the truck will not move forward at all, some will move in 5th but at low power and speed. From what I have gathered it depends on how and when the snap ring fails. Some of the low speed instances, where people were pulling out after being stopped, or changing directions, the snap ring seems to have just fallen out of the place. If they decided not to drive it and have it towed, the internal damage is less and there is little to no debris found in the pan during inspection and diagnosis. The ones that chose to drive it, or had to given their situations, seem far more likely to cause more damage. Those are the ones who seem to be getting the additional components at the time of replacement. Usually it’s the trans cooler, lines, etc.
The TSB instructs the techs to repair the internals but that doesn’t seem to be happening very often, or if at all. I have a few people who are waiting on the “TSB parts kit” but it seems to be heavily backordered. All of the completed repairs I’ve had reported to me were full transmission replacements.
