2019 Truck cap/topper/camper shell thread

Well finally after 3 years (I think I started this thread even?), I have joined the hard top club. Got a used 2018 A.R.E. Z Series. Fits perfect, even with my bigger cargo cam 3rd brake light. I should have done this a long time ago.
That looks great. The lines on that ARE Z look better than my lower end model for sure.

How many options are there out there for the soft topper? I have looked through this thread and seen a few, I am on the fence right now on one. I currently have a quad fold tonneau cover that I do not like, but not sure that I want to spend the money for a hard topper just yet, as well I am not sure if our bikes would fit under the hard topper. It snows quite a bit here, has anyone had issues with the soft topper with a good bit of snow. Post some pics please of your soft toppers if you don't mind.

Three that I've seen. Softopper (now owned by Bestop), Bestop and Fas-top.

Haven’t thought about this thread in a while. I couldn’t imagine life without my topper now that I’ve had one for a while.

I have seen one of these in person and would do this over a softopper if that was the kind of topper I was interested in.

Wow, I don't think I'd use that if they paid me $1600 for it.

Interesting, I have never seen anything like that before.

Can you get sides that also have window with that one, or just solid?
Only solid on the new version. You can find the old version out there with the side windows though. Not sure if I would go the route though. To echo some of the comments, and while the soft topper serves it's purpose; if I had to do it again, I would apply the ~$1K towards a RSI smart cap, and not get the soft topper

it is actually pretty cool. It is rock hard when pumped up. similar to how the inflatable paddle boards are. I have seen few running around here and they actually look kind of cool in person. That said I would never go back to a soft style topper again but we all have different needs and tastes.

I'd like to see it in person, because the photos look insane.

I am torn on my soft topper. I love the functionality, but also hate the looks. I'd go full shell, but removal is a concern, yet I've never taken my soft topper down for any real reason that windows couldn't solve.

This doesn't answer your question, but I wanted to mention that I just got a hard topper and my 26" mountain bikes stand up in there. You have to lean them to get them through the back opening but once it clears that, they stand up.

Would you recommend the softopper for a cross country trip with dogs in the back? It will be all southern states but the temps at night can still dip down low in the colder months. Mostly concerned about the tarps ability to provide a good seal against the wind.

It kept all of our stuff dry and contained on our trips. Also, I don't think their is any issue with wind--the topper doesn't really move while driving, and dust doesn't get in.

I think that would be half my concern with your dogs. It's black and gets really hot under there, even after driving. There is no air flow unless you remove the side panels, which would obviously increase wind hitting the dogs.

Now, that is the bestop. There is a kit for the softopper that aligns with the back window of your truck. You could plumb cool air or heat this way while also protecting the dogs from the elements.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the quick reply. You definitely gave me something to think about.
