My wife and I are starting a new foray into bee keeping tonight! Got the hive all set up and painted (Brie spent a lot of time on that fancy paint job lol) and a colony of bees to put in. Excited to start!

Any other bee keepers out there?

You collecting honey to sell or private use?

Mom's boyfriend's family had a huge bee honey farm up in Illinois. I remember as a young kid, him coming back after visiting the farm with big 5 gal buckets of honey comb. I'd grab a chunk and chew it like candy, spitting out a big hunk of wax when I was done.

That sounds amazing!

Just private use for ourselves and to give away. Our intention for getting the bees was actually primarily for the fact that they are in decline but also for our garden/yard. We've got a large vegetable garden, blueberry plants, apple trees and lots of flower gardens (my wife loves gardening) so we figured a good hive of pollinators was just a natural next step.

Sounds like fun.

I can't have any as the wife is allergic.

All I have is a lemon tree that's finally producing almost year round. Lemons as big as a grapefruit.

Got a Avocado tree that my buddy grew from a seed and I traded my loquat tree for it. It's finally blooming this year.

My flowerbed blooms almost year round. It covers 2 sides of the house as I live on a corner.

Oh man you're one of those lucky guys that lives in a climate where citrus and avocados do well! I'd love to grow fresh citrus but western WA wouldn't allow. I hear fresh off the tree lemons actually taste good straight? Is that true?

Yep. We didn't get the typical meyers lemons as the wife doesn't like them. Not sure what kind it is, but they are big and juicy with minimal seeds. We squeeze them right into our glass of ice water.
Just pulling them off the tree you can smell them. Not too tart, not to sweet.

Yea, I'm 5 miles from the coast here in almost central Cali, about half way between Malibu and Santa Barbara. Weather is 70 year around, plus or minus 10 for the most part. But it cost to live here.

Looking at moving up to north of Reno, Nv when I retire again in a few years.

Sounds like paradise other than it costing so much (california in general...)

That’s real awesome. May I ask where you got the hive and colony from?

A local bee-keeping store here in town

Really nice people. Lots of information as well. They sold us a kit which came with the hive, tools, bees, and protective gear. We bought some books as well because we had about two months from when we bought the kit to when the bees were ready for pickup from the local fairgrounds.

That’s great. My daughters been mentioning beekeeping the last couple of months, but honesty I’m scared of the little buggers. I see you have them right next to your house so that can’t be too much trouble.

haha that is what I am hoping! Luckily neither my wife or myself are scared of honey or bumble bees. I hate hornets and wasps but honey bees tend to just leave you alone unless you're already asking for it. Keep in mind I am very much a newb when it comes to this but everything I read about the bees supplied by bee places tells me that the variety they sell is an inherently docile breed as well. And I certainly won't be one of those guys going to the hive without gear on either LOL. I've been stung plenty in my life and don't really feel like inviting it on myself.

Do duck eggs taste good?
My wife loves them for baking. If you like a heavy yoke to dip your toast in then yes. They don’t lay an egg every day like a chicken rather in clutches of a dozen or so. Then they shut down. Sometimes for months. I’d say over all it’s cheaper and less hassle to just buy eggs at the store, but it’s been good for the kids. Some hard life lessons and a some good experiences.

Absolutely a good experience for kids! I've been under the impression for a while now that many people I know (adults....) think their meat and animal products just grow in the grocery store packages...
