Spare Tire Lug Nut Wrench - WILL DAMAGE YOUR WHEEL

Good morning All,

So I got a flat the other day. Took out the factory provided jack/tools. As I was taking off the wheel the exterior of the socket part of the lug nut wrench deeply scratched the interior of the area of where the lug nut is as I turned it. At first I thought I put it in crooked, but after I made sure it went in perfect, as I turned it damaged the wheel. I took it to the dealer and they agreed that Ram should have provided a thin socket lug nut wrench. At this time I am waiting to hear back on if it should be warranty related/covered or not. Service Adviser even said that was very odd. Went to the lot and got the lug nut wrench off another HD and confirmed that the outter lip of the lug nut wrench was to wide. Wish me luck all and make sure you check your lug nut tool before using it on your own wheels. For reference, I have a 22 Limited 3500 SRW with Black Edition 20" wheels. Has anyone heard of this issue? Thoughts?

Thanks for the heads up, I don't have my new 2022 since I just ordered the same truck late December. I now know
to look into the lug wrench they ship and check if changes have been made.

What size is the lug nut for a 22 3500, so I can bring along the right socket?

I just buy a gorilla bar. It comes with various sized sockets so if I’m towing a trailer etc. I’m covered. It extends out too so you have more leverage.

Search for Gorilla Power Wrench - the other will get you pry/wrecking bars.

:)

Not a fan of the angle on those, just like the factory one. I would up spend and get something like this:

ETA: After looking at the reviews, I rescind the recommendation on this item. Seems not strong enough.

Sorry that happened.

I carry impact sockets and torque wrench for the truck and trailers. Don't think I've ever used the factory lug wrench on any of my trucks and I've changed plenty of tires.
Yup thats the best way, i keep my M18 impact, impact sockets and tq wrench in the truck also a 20 ton bottle jack in the camper…. Hate being on the side of the road for longer than needed lol

Good advice gents. Lets see what Ram says about replacing my wheel. Not saying carrying a socket isn't a good idea, but if Ram is going to provide a lug nut wrench it should at LEAST not damage your wheel. I want to see if they replace my wheel AND give me a solution for the lug nut wrench. Maybe a different lug nut wrench or THEY can give me a thin socket lol

I keep a Dewalt 20 volt 1/2 impact and 22mm socket under the back seat. If you have the chrome acorn nuts using a 7/8 socket will actually deform the the caps just slightly.

Hello All,

Update. DLR called me back and said Warranty denied the claim. Told me to contact @RamCares. Called and the Case Manager told me that wheels are not covered. I explained that the wheel would NOT have been damaged if Ram provided the correct lug nut wrench. The lug nut wrench Ram provided was defective resulting in damage to my wheel. Case Manager said he will review but will likely be denied. I spoke with DLR again and Service Adviser said he would review with his Area Rep. He agrees this is Rams fault as if the wheel lug nut wrench was NOT defective, the wheel would not have been damaged. I will keep you all in the loop.

No surprise on the denial. Unfortunately, seems like all badges are denying just about any warranty claim that they can nowadays. Good heads up for the crowd here to make sure you properly equip your truck for changing flats if you can't depend on the factory supplied equipment. Like some of the others, I too carry sockets and something to drive them with as well as a hydraulic jack. It's from my RV hauling days when you had to produce all that equipment to get your truck approved to haul new campers.

I'm a Fixed Ops Director for a dealership with a couple of very high end brands currently. That being said, I held the same position in a Mopar branded store around 8 years ago.
I would say that at that time, a call to my Regional Aftersales Manager would have resulted in a goodwill claim or warranty claim to cover the wheel.
They were very switched on to customer satisfaction at the local level and were very good about helping customers with reasonable requests.

I see many complaints on this forum (and others) where people complain about the dealer or manufacturer. Honestly there are a fair number of complaints made where I don't agree with the consumer.
This IS NOT one of them. I absolutely think they be taking care of the wheel for you.
I would recommend kindly asking your local dealer Service Manager for a little help on this one. Remember, you catch more fly's with honey... Best to start off in a friendly fashion and you'll likely get a little love on this one.

I am going to fight it. I work at Corp. with another manufacturer and know this is something I can take all the way to Small Claims if need be. Surprisingly people do it ALL the time. Lets see what happens. @MacDuff Well said and agree with you! Like I said working at Corp Level with Lemon Law, I feel this warrantys a good will repair.

Nope. Just makes it hard to get a second date!
Unless you are this guy, he has never had any problems getting a date with any little piggy he wants....
