DEF - What brand do you use?

Hi All... In reading through many posts it seems that there is very little care about DEF brand. I am new to the DEF need, and came from the 2004.5 Duramax. It was a hard decision to come to the RAM line as I have been a Chevy truck guy all of my life. In switching brands, I now am learning how to work with and whether to trust a new dealership. The jury is still out on my feelings about them, and that is why i am commenting in this thread.

My sales guy went out of his way to make sure I knew to use the Mopar brand DEF. He claimed that they have seen several issues with the DEF crystalizing in the lines, plugging up the system. He claims in every case it was from the owner using cheap DEF fluid. He gave me the "I absolutely don't care if you purchase it here" line, but be sure to only use Mopar brand DEF. He further stated "We have not had one truck have an issue that was using Mopar brand"....

Ok, i know a line when i hear it, but has anyone heard of this crystalizing issue from using non mopar brand DEF?

Only happen if you let the truck sit for a year and a half without running it , and even then not in the lines just the top of the tank if its not full. Dealer is totally fool of crap on failures with cheap def ! All def is made to the iso standard. We have tractors running def and they sit for 9 months sometimes without being used and we have never had a issue is 8 years.

Probably. Lesser of two evils if it did freeze a larger volume. It will take less time to thaw.

Just a fun fact for everyone , What is the freeze point of DEF? A 32.5% solution of DEF will begin to crystallize and freeze at 12 deg F (-11 deg C). At 32.5%, both the urea and water will freeze at the same rate, ensuring that as it thaws, the fluid does not become diluted, or over concentrated. The freezing and unthawing of DEF will not cause degradation of the product

I just ordered some Peak Blue through Napa for $12.49. This was the cheapest DEF I could find.
There is no DEF at any Walmart near me.

everyone i talk to says to use Peak Blue, although i was wondering why people don't just use the Mopar DEF. its clear so no added dyes, comes in a simple plastic jug so no cardboard to deal with.

Cost for one. The Blue Def is clear. It's all the same stuff.

I think all DEF is clear. Peak Blue is just a brand name.

I've been using Blue DEF only because the local Walmart has been out of their store brand

fair enough, i'm new to diesel, and i thought i saw a colored DEF, but i may be mistaken. As far as price i think it is only like $1 more for the Mopar version.

Peak BlueDEF Platinum. I have no idea if it is really any cleaner for the injector, but because of the shortage of replacement parts for the DEF system, I figure it is worth spending a few bucks more until some of the parts become easier to get. Then I'll switch to some of the cheaper brands. Probably going to be awhile!

My 19 has had nothing but the platinum. Trucks regens better faster. Def system seems to be happy. I believe this stuff is better. I deal with def systems everyday with caterpillar machines. People say def is def but this stuff is definitely better for the system. I always recommend this def over others

Last three jugs have been through Home Depot. Walked in one day and there’s a pallet of Blue Def at $10.95, cheaper than Walmart. Next trip was a pallet of Shell branded def at near to same price, bought that. Last time was Blue again. Convenient as I’m always at Home Depot it seems.

DPF and DEF are to different systems but now work together. Tons to explain on them. Best if you just google it and do some reading. Sorry but it can be a long explanation

Bingo on the Walmart stuff... i scored 4 jugs last week at the local WM for $7.88 per jug. Gotta grab them when theyre in stock.

You guys were not kidding about DEF being hard to find. I picked up my truck Friday and was at Walmart over the weekend, decided to pick up a jug. The shelf was basically empty, a few jugs of the Blue and a few platinum jugs. I was hoping to score the Walmart brand I bought the regular blue. I wonder if there is a way in which we dont have to run this stuff while increasing power and fuel mileage at the same time.... hmmmm?

Check Wally later in the evening when they stage pallets of stock on the floor. I've scored stuff parked on a pallet in the auto section before... Probably drives their inventory control bonkers. LOL

Another place to look guys if you have in your area is Cat, Deere etc. dealers. They will have def. We don’t have a choice we have to keep DEF in stock for our machines.

I check 4 Walmart's. All I found was fat people in thin people clothing.

I checked Tractor Supply, Lowes, Home Depot.

I said F-it and started checking online for the cheapest DEF. $12.49 on sale at Napa. I bought 3.
I have 5 boxes in stock at my house. I almost feel I should buy a 55 gallon drum.

I'm going to stir this up one more time because I don't recall seeing actual first hand accounts on this. Has anyone here had a failure of the DPS and DEF systems attributed to using bulk DEF from a truckstop? I'm not talking about hearsay from a guy that works with your friends friends brother or what the dealer claims will happen if you do not use a certain brand. There's a lot of Cummins engines in OTR semis using bulk DEF from truckstops every day.

Thats exactly what i did , 55 gallon drum $112 from our oil supplier ! much cheaper then store bought jugs

any random truck stop kind. Never had an issue, and have just over 100K as of yesterday, and I am now the warranty. I don't think I ever bought a jug of DEF since new. Always truck stop DEF from the pump
