Yes. Catching is allowed in NADD version at least, other organizations may differ.
We find that it encourages the dogs to jump further if they think they can catch it. And if they do, it is more exciting for the spectators. So we always let them catch one or two at events.
The perfect toss would actually about 6" above and in front of the dogs nose..

Weathertech https://www.weathertech.com/ram/2020/ram25003500/ I use the rear seat cover, which is very easy to install and uninstall. I only use it for the dog, so I fold it up in a littlle gbag and tuck it under the rear seat when not wanted. The door protectors work well too

Had a few boston's growing up. They are fun dogs. We had one, Rocky, that could jump 5' in the air standing still.
