Windshield tint w ceramic film

So at work I’ve been leaving a sun visor in my front. A few co-workers said to get the ceramic film, they got on a few vehicles now and spoke highly of its improvements. They even recommended “my” tint guy. Haha, saying I already used him for the door windows.

So,

Not to derail here, but if this ceramic windshield film is so awesome, how long until the windshield manufacturers and car companies start putting a ceramic barrier on windshields when they are made? Before they are ever installed on the vehicles?

Sorry tint guys as I know that would start to take some of your business.

I would guess the same reason they don't ceramic coat the cars at the factory - not everyone wants or needs it. I think the average person keeps car 3 years so they don't need a 5yr or 7 yr ceramic coat or 10 year tint guarantee so there are less expensive options. I did it because mine has to be parked outside in Texas sun every day exposed to the elements. I try to keep it looking the best I can. I did ceramic tint primarily to keep the car cooler when I'm driving it and it works great. The dash still gets hot when parked but its main purpose is blocking the uv light, the infrared coating stops some of the heat. I also use a sunvisor when its parked, the combo seems to really help. I also had a Challenger that was just a fun car for weekends date night etc.. Always garage parked and covered, the factory tint was fine and I used regular wax. Options for everyone.

I am in Arizona. The ceramic tint is worth its price. I just had my 2022 done. The rear glass and the two rear doors of our trucks are 'smoked tinted' glass. They DO NOT provide ANY UV protection. The dealership charged $300 to "Tint Vehicle" but all they did was tint the front two doors.
In my last truck, I had 20% on all doors and 70% on the windshield. The minute I got into this truck, I could feel the heat. The kids even felt it. However, 20% at night on the doors were hard to view out of, had to roll the windows down in dark areas.

In this truck, I did 35% all around and 70% on the front windshield. It made a world of a difference. As you know, here in Arizona, 110+ days.. man.
These AC units feel like they have 2 speeds less than a normal HVAC - so this definitely made a difference. I find my AC turned down 1 or 2 from max after a 10-minute drive.

These pictures are from the moment the tint guys left, and told me to leave it in the garage since it was so hot outside. So they appear a bit darker than they really are.

Man that truck is clean, like, literally, so clean.

Back on topic, my tint guy who comes recommended by all and whom I have also had great experience with seems hesitant to do ceramic on ram windshields. This is because if any droplets get into the dash and drip down they mess up the trucks computer and screen. He has seen customers report lights flickering, screen goes blank and even a truck that won’t start since he did their windshield.

Has anyone else witnessed a problem with drips getting down into their dash and messing up their radio screen?

Well, the truck is clean because, 1 it's brand new. 2. Was just detailed by them. :)

So, your guy that does tint is just nervous about the BCM that is under the dash. It's on the firewall. Many tint people who don't know what they are doing have fried the BCM because of the water running down on it. The guy that did my tint has been doing my vehicles since 2012. Back when I had my 2014 CTD, he mentioned they have to becareful due to the BCM location.

This truck, they had a plastic cover that went over the top of the BCM, It looked home made and they also used what is called a soaker rope. Nothing gets past the rope. Never had any issues when they do this.

Also, some said they have had issues, but once the water dries, everything was fine. But don't take that risk. Ask them to use the rope. If they don't want to do it, you need to find a new tint guy.

Reviving this thread. I switched tint places for convenience since I first bought and tinted this truck. I insist on 3m or xpel as they seem to have the best reputation and support.

Had my Ram in for some PPF repairs. Decided to make a tint change. My windshield wasn’t dark enough. I thought I had 70% 3m crystalline film on my truck…maybe that was the last truck? They used a meter and said it was 50%. Either way it was 3m crystalline film. So we did 35% Xpel XR.

I have 50% on my wife’s suburban and it seems darker than the 50% they say I had. Is it the window angle? Who knows, the interiors are both dark and her SUV looks way darker.

I like dark tint. This doesn’t seem too dark but I have not driven it at night yet. 35% windshield Xpel. 5% 3M driver and pass. 15% 3M on all the rear glass.
Last truck was 5% all around. I might do 5% on the rear glass next.

burb has the 50windshield/5fronts/15 everything else recipe and seems darker than my Ram with the same recipe.

I also have my Rubicon 392 in the 50windshield/5fronts/15 everything else category.

I want to go darker than my last truck, 50% shield, 5% strip, 20% fronts, stock rears. I think I like the 5% and 15% over stock idea. May stick with the 50% on the shield.

Just out of curiosity, who do you use for your tint? I am south of Joliet. I have been using Midwest Tint and Vinyl out in St Charles, I work up that way.

I believe ClawSS is right on with his comments about insurance company and legal liability. I can envision someone with a tinted windshield hitting a person at night. Maybe the person ran in front of the truck, Maybe the person drove their bicycle/motorcycle into traffic or drove their car in front of a person with a tinted windshield. The person with the tinted windshield has Collision/Comprehensive coverage. Their truck is totaled. They file a claim with their insurance company for the loss. The insurance adjuster inspects the totaled truck. They find a tinted windshield. Claim denied! Now the person with the tinted windshield is out of a truck. Hold on, the problems are just beginning. The other injured or dead party's relatives file a civil lawsuit against the truck driver. Ya, the injured or dead party was probably at fault, however they'll claim the truck driver could have avoided the accident if they didn't have a tinted windshield, and therefore could see them. If the jury finds for the plaintiff, the truck driver can now tell his family they've lost their truck, any other vehicles, their house, and any liquid assets. Even if the jury finds for the plaintiff, does the plaintiff have thousands of dollars to pay for a lawyer!

I have an expensive pair of sunglasses for when I'm driving, and a sunscreen I put in my windshield when I'm parked. I'll keep everything I own and avoid the risk! In today's society people will take people to court over anything!

I use Abe's custom car care in Mokena and I am very happy with their work and the materials they use. Prior to this I would go all the way to Naperville to use Z tech, who uses 3m films. They also do good work, but I wanted to try someplace closer to where I live for convenience.
