Will I be disappointed in 22 3500 coming from a F350 Powerstoke?

Hello all,
I’m new to the forum and a possible new Dodge owner. I’ve drove Powerstrokes since 2002. Never had an issue with them. I’m currently driving a 2019 F350 SRW Powerstroke. 450hp/935ftlb torque. It only has 26K miles on it. 20K of those miles has been with a 20K pound load behind it. I’ve had zero issues with the truck.
For no reason at all other than wanting to try something different, I’m considering a 22’ Ram 3500 DRW with the standard output diesel/trans. Numbers show 370hp/850ftlbs. This seems like a significant decrease (to me).

I’ve driven both the HO and SO, just test driven, unloaded. I can’t find the truck I want in the HO version in a Longhorn trim without paying significantly more than I’m wanting to (dealer markup way over MSRP).

So can anyone give me any advice on if I will be disappointed in the performance of the SO 22’ 3500 vs my current truck? This is going to be my daily driver as well. Short commute of 10-12 miles to/from work in a rural/suburban area. Not much “city” driving.

Any help is appreciated

The Powerstroke will be much faster empty. Going from the Powerstroke to the SO Cummins will be very noticeable empty and loaded. Your giving up 80 HP and 85 Ft Lb of torque and a better six speed. I went from a 3500 SRW SO to HO and unloaded not super noticeable, but loaded the HO pulls better as expected.

Do you tow often? Cummins is a grunt machine, tows well. Ford is like an old school muscle car, fast.

I'd say so... I'm looking at ordering a 23 Superduty and trading my 21 ram 3500 HO Laramie night edition. I'm just not happy with empty performance, especially after driving the 10 speed super duty. It tows good but after using the 10speed, it's night and day difference in performance... Now the exhaust, ram hands down is better. Maybe ford improved it with their 23my. Well see.

That’s disappointing to hear. I love the appearance, both inside and outside, of the Ram. I think the interior is so much nicer than the the Ford. But that just seems like a lot of power to give up. I may look into ordering a Ram with the HO and see what the cost is vs what the dealer is offering.

Honestly these days i think its literally pick your favorite interior and go with it. There may be some features that stand out on particular brand but at this point there all so close. Ill give the heavy towing badge to a cummins all day though. Ive hauled the same 24,000lbs with my 07 5.9 g56 as i did with my 15 limited dually HO, the 15 pulled it better but the 5.9 got better mileage! Hook all 3 up to any trailer within their limits and theyll all react somewhat the same.

Yeah, it was but the new 2023 super duty interiors are just as nice or better. Ram just hasn't done enough to keep me as a customer at this point.

A few dealers here will do 4% under invoice. If your local dealer or one close can't get close/offset your travel or shipping costs, consider going the distance.

Tuning will get that back and much more

I haven’t deleted and tuned a truck since my 2014 F350. Back then Spartan was the one to use. What is available now for Ram? I typically run out of years before I run out of miles on my warranties so Id be stuck with an un-tuned stock power truck for atleast 3yrs unless I wanted to void the warranty.

In my area, southeast, if you tow, Ram is dominant. At horse competitions, out of 10 trucks, 6 will be Ram, 3 Ford, and 1 Duramax. Same in the campgrounds. If you don't regularly tow heavy, then the Ford is more fun, but the Cummins is the best tow beast out there.

For 22+ Rams you are going to be limited for tuning and it is ridiculously expensive. They just "cracked" the ECM a few weeks ago and right now you are looking at over $4000 just to tune it.

Do you know what company cracked it ? PM me the name if so. Thanks

Not needed to delete calibrated power has great tunes without deleting

I like others have had both ( HO-SO) The Aisin tranny is much better in my opinion when towing and the additional horsepower and torque is nice also . I ordered my Longhorn in 20 . I ordered all my class 8 rigs when Iwas on the road . Better experience you can set it up exactly as you want . The dealer has no lot time invested in the truck and u can deal better I think . It is worth the wait . Kinda like being a kid again and Christmas is coming .

I was happy to think this was gonna be the solution to my worries. However I just called Calibrated and they still don’t have any tunes for the 2022 yet. Still working on decoding the ECM. He said it could be months still at this point. Isn’t that a bag a beans….

Inline 6! There is a reason truckers use them.

Gives you time to run the truck and get any warranty issues ironed out lol
