When I ordered my 2020, I had choice of 18- or 20-inch wheels. My 2025 order only has 20-inch wheels. Why would they put 285/60/20-inch tires on a 3500 4x4 Mega Cab?
I have been meaning to ask this for some time now and was hoping for 18 inch as that is always what I ran. Might need to trade them in on 18 inch if I don't like the ride with the 20 inch.
The bigger 20" wheels have 11% less sidewall with the 285 60R20. Our 2024 Ram 3500 4x4 SRW has 275 70R18 tires on 18 inch wheels.
Our 2016 Ram 2500 4x4 Power Wagon has 35 12.50R17 tires. The 18 inch wheels was already a small 1 inch jump from a 17 inch. I had no interest in the 3500 4x4 trucks for sale with the 20 inch wheels.
This is our Ram 3500 4x4 tires as it is today currently as parked. The mud is bentonite clay which sticks to the tires like peanut butter and dries like concrete. Need that slightly higher sidewall in rocks and mud to keep from bashing the rims.
I run both 18's and 20's on my 22 and cannot tell a difference in the empty ride when the tires are at the proper pressure, both in the OE sizes.
The 20's hands down handle better than 18's, especially when loaded.
The added sidewall on the 18's is nice for hunting back roads when I air down to 35/25, which is the only reason I still have a set of 18's.
The tire design makes a much bigger difference in traction than the slightly shorter sidewall does. My 20's are Duratrac Goodyear RT-LT's and have better snow/ice/mud traction than any of tires I've ran on the 18's.
I much prefer the 20's on all road surfaces aside from the roughest and nastiest of USFS roads, but I put several hundred miles a year on those roads and need a tire with a little more sidewall and a tough sidewall for puncture resistance.
I was leery of the 20's at first, but after running them for a couple years I am a big fan.
