What is this noise? - truck NOT running - SOLUTION POSTED

can you take a video of start up, idle for a few seconds, then shut down.. all in one video?

I could, but it's snowing outside...

It was 70F Saturday, 25F and snow Sunday-Tue. Wed 65. Today it's 27F and snowing again.

Typical Colorado front range weather.

I make it a point to go outside when I'm Colorado snow ;)

I was just curi

That's crazy try touching different components to see where noise is coming from if u can duplicate it on command

It suddenly stopped before I could do that. Haven't run it again since.

I will probably check it this weekend when it warms up a bit.

Is it the EGR valve brush/scrubber? Mine makes noise after I shut it off and I saw somewhere that these trucks have an automatic brush that cleans off the EGR valve after shut down to prevent the valve from getting clogged/sticking open.

Haven't heard that, but the clickity-clack after shutdown is the DEF pump purging.

I've searched trying to find it but cannot. It was some video I watched recently where there's a little brush in the egr valve and the motor runs back and forth cleaning itself after shutdown. Might have been a different motor though since I've been cheating on Cummins watching powerstroke and duramax videos lol

For five minutes! I don't plan to delete this truck but if there's some wire brush toting squirrel in there working on the EGR valve after shutdown, it's azz is most certainly getting deleted. Battery juice is just way too precious at -30 to accomodate that nonsense. ;)

When we are all driving Tesla trucks up here in the northern winters those electric squirrel nut scratchers will be commonplace.

Per the dealer, this is the DEF Evacuation Pump and is normal.

Said it pulls DEF out of the lines to prevent freezing.

It must not be temp related because it was 70F that day...

So basically, have a design that makes loud random noises and let the users figure out if this is normal or not... 2 thumbs up FCA.

I wonder if that is a 2020 feature. I survived one cold winter in my 2019 3500, and I never heard that sound. The only DEF sound I heard is when the DEF fluid is injected for a few seconds immediately after turning off the truck.

Update: talked to the mechanic after the service writer called me.

Per the MECHANIC, this is the DEF Evacuation Pump and is normal.

Said it pulls DEF out of the lines to prevent freezing in winter and evap in summer.

Never heard that on mine at all!!

yeah. no.

can you compare a few trucks on the lot with a "tech" standing next to you..?

Maybe it was running too long or sucking air, I dunno.

I noticed it very briefly when I got home with the truck, parked, and exited.

Indeed, this has got to be something new for the 20s cuz I've never heard anything like it and otherwise wouldn't have made the comment I did in post #4. I gotta wonder if the "DEF pump" is not shutting off when it should. My purging cycle lasts no more than 5-10 seconds. And it don't sound anything like what is depicted in the Op's vids.

I'm actually glad to hear that's there. If my current Duramax Denali had had something like that, it would have saved me 4 winter trips to the dealer over DEF freezing/crystalizing issues.

Now that I think about it, i'm glad the GMC didn't have the system, because then I wouldn't have started shopping RAM
