WDH for a cargo trailer?

I've never weighed it, but my 8.5x18 cargo trailer, loaded with tools, mowers, construction nuts/bolts/screws/fasteners, loaded to the max space available, didn't even squat my 2013 RAM 2500 more than 2 inches. Towed from south Florida to North Carolina without issues.

I've used it to move folks and had it loaded up to the max space wise several time. Always find something heavy to load up front.

Never used a WDH on a cargo trailer.

Travel trailers are taller, and for the size, are not as heavy a my loaded cargo trailer is. So perhaps the sail affect is more pronounced in the TT than the cargo trailer.

I do prefer my 5th wheel camper to a travel trailer. And gooseneck equipment trailers over pumper pull equipment trailers.
 
I helped my brother bring a tractor back from TX. The tractor was aprox 5000 lbs. My trailer has 3500lb axles and the trailer weighs aprox 2000 lbs. We put the tractor forward on the trailer enough to put some weight on the rer of my 2500. It towed fine. Mostly at 70mph or less the 120 miles back. Thats the max weight to put on my trailer.

I would never use one personally on a cargo trailer but I would use one on a RV trailer.
 
The OP is pulling a 24’ enclosed car hauler and loading it with a 12’ long Jeep and some furniture. This is waaay different from pulling a 24’ TT.

It’s like what @Rockcrawlerdude said - he can move the Jeep around and redistribute weight instead of using a $500 WDH to redistribute the weight.
You can’t do this with a travel trailer.

Trailer sway is another story….

Doesn't the WDH level out the trailer and rear of the car? It also helps reduce trailer sway?

So why so I can move things around to distribute the weight. You want 60% of the weight forward for improved towing stability. If you have airbags you won't need the WDH to level the truck but it won't help with trailer sway.


So yes a WDH does help. If not, then they are all frauds and are selling snake oil

I agree with you on all of your points. I was simply pointing out that for a cargo trailer, there is typically a lot more wiggle room for planning how to load it up so that you can keep the balance optimized. I do this with mine, and can alter the tongue weight tremendously depending on how I load it. I think the is what @Rockcrawlerdude was getting at.

I rent travel trailers (typically tandem axle, 24-26') and they always come with a WDH. TT's are probably designed from the get-go to be balanced correctly, but I don't know how well it works out after you load up the pass through storage area with a bunch of gear.

And yes, a WDH is supposed to help control trailer sway.
 
I don’t believe your 3500 squats 2” with 750lb of tongue weight. Sorry not sorry.

I’ve loaded over 2400lb in the bed of my 2500 (not including the topper) and it squatted less than 1”
Putting the weight over your axle, vs 5 feet behind it makes a huge difference! Including
unloading your front axle.
