Picked up my new 2024 Ram 3500 Laramie Diesel last Saturday, drove home 90 miles without incident. 2 days later with 255 miles on the truck, I get the water in fuel warning. I followed the procedure for draining the fuel filters and the warning light went out for about 100 miles, then it reappeared. Followed the procedure once again and got rid of the light.
Being a brand new truck, I'm not thrilled about the issue but at the same time, I understand things happen. Considering the dealership is 90 miles from my house, if it happens again should I continue to drain the filters, bring it to a local dealership OR, send it on a flat bed back to the dealership I bought it from?

I would start with fresh fuel and filters, maybe you got bad gas. You have a brand new truck so you could take it to the dealership but the factory warranty is not going to cover bad gas, they’ll likely charge you for it. If fresh fuel doesn’t fix it, I’d take it to the nearest dealership, they all honor factory warranties, so long as it’s a Ram dealer.

Sounds like a bad tank of diesel to me. I'd have the tank drained and refilled with known good fuel as well as drain down the filter bowels. The dealer might help you out in that regard, but these things do happen. One of my old mans buddies had been using the same station in town for years (that most of us avoided) - ended up with like 12 gallons of water in his diesel tank filling up after we had some bad storms.

I usually don't let the dealer fill up a new truck for me or I make sure we go to a good station - In my experience, especially around smaller towns, the cheap place to get diesel (unless its walmart or the truck stop) ain't the place you wanna be getting diesel from.

YEP, lesson learned! The dealer filled it up for me prior to me picking it up and most likely got some bad fuel. Unfortunately, I'm on a camping trip pulling my camper for the first time with the new truck so I really can't do much. If the water in fuel comes back on again, I'll perform the drain and then bring it in for a complete drain and filter change. Thanks for the help all.

Are you actually getting water when you drain the bowl? You very well could have a bad sensor or faulty wiring. When you drain the bowl if there is water in the fuel it will be obvious.

Sorry for the delay answering. Yes, there was a slight amount of water in the rear filter drain when opened the first time. The second time more water came out and I actually flushed it 2x after that second issue. I have since had zero water in fuel lights come on and I've filled the tank 2.5 times. I have 1100 miles on the truck now and the WIF light hasn't come on since 360 miles. Hopefully it's done.

Yea you should be done if you've been filling up and no mater WIF lights. I'd check it one last time - and then just follow good fuel practices. Glad to hear its resolved for you.

...also keep it documented. Was the DEF tank full when you got it? Whomever went to fuel it up could of "accidentally" started to service the DEF side and hit the big hole first and then a quick realization they goofed up. A quick head turn left and right...no one is the wiser. Not sure if'n DEF would set off the WIF light but that stuff can't be good and a little bit would get washed out but just something to keep in mind.

Yes, both the DEF and fuel were both filled. The issue is documented with the selling dealership.
Thanks everyone
