Just setup the Ottocast for video streaming. I know all the legalities to playing videos while driving, but this is a great feature for my passengers during road trips.
This is a cheap ($129) box that plugs into the usb port. You then connect your phone to the box. Now apps like YouTube and Netflix are available on the display.

I use a CarPlay AI box in my other vehicle to display my radar detector app (JBV1) and OBD apps. You could probably run AllfaOBD/JSCAN on it also.

Not sure all of the differences, but price is the big one. I don't really plan to use this device daily so didn't want to spend $300+ on a streaming device. In fact, when I purchased mine, it was on sale, so it was under $100. In the other thread, there was a mention of the Ottocast but nobody confirmed function with the 22+ Uconnect. I can confirm that it works.

I can’t think of a worse thing for safety than having a movie, Youtube video, or music video playing on the info screen. If your passengers need to watch a video, get them an ipad or android equivalent. Drivers who say they wouldn’t be distracted are either lying or naive.

I spend about seven hours at a stretch just sitting in my truck once or twice a month. I have an iPad with bluetooth speaker that I use to watch a movie or two or visit websites, etc. during that time (at night). Having a 12" screen with the truck's speakers to watch a movie would be great. Unfortunately I don't know of a way to keep the entertainment system operating with the truck turned off.

If you push the "start" button once without touching the brake, the truck will go into accessory mode and the radio will operate. I'm not sure what else is on so I'd maybe check on battery draw. Do you have a clamp-on ammeter to check the battery cables? I've had good luck with this one - UNI-T UT210e Digital Clamp Meter - on Amazon. It comes in very handy for checking parasitic draw and the load from various things.

Your iPad may have a better screen. I wonder if you could get the sound over the truck's speaker system and watch on the iPad.

I am going to play the devils advocate here. On long trips I play videos on my phone. The main screen would be safer. And, I believe I am SAFER playing the videos. Why? Because I am far less drowsy as it keeps my mind active. Is it a great idea around town? Maybe not. But on a long road trip I would love to see some science. I do not believe the average driver is going to crash because a video is playing on the screen. Fiddling with a little tiny phone screen for this, or texting or other things can cause accidents obviously. If we set aside bias, we can design safer systems, instead of just saying something must be dangerous. Lets make mobile devices EASIER to use in the car, and in turn save lives from all the fiddling that causes eyes to be taken off the road.

In all honesty, I have put on some Netflix comedy specials while running solo from CA to NM or to AZ for work a few times. I don't really need to have this option but F it, why not? This topic comes up on every forum regarding every car equipped with a screen. I've had video in motion on just about every car I've owned since 2010, including my 2008 Cadillac STS-V that had a factory 6 dick DVD player. LOL! There will always be "that guy" who says it is wrong, distracting, or whatever, but in the end, if you have a big ass screen in your vehicle, and a cell phone in your possession, you are distracted.

Agreed. Except I listen to podcasts of some kind. Preferably long format. The distraction to driving is scrolling through one of the apps on the screen to find one I want to listen too. What would be smart and safer is if android auto gave me full screen with larger icons like I'm an old person using an oversized button phone, hahaha. Maybe they do it on the new trucks but if you could scroll apps on the drivers dash screen like you can truck information with steering wheel controls that would be pimp.

For long trips my wife and I check out an audio book from the library and play it through Android Auto.

Maybe it’s just me, but when I watch a movie, I WATCH the movie. I agree that all the stuff we have is more and more distracting. Fussing with menus and touchscreens is not as safe as single purpose buttons. I know that when I complete a hands-free phone call, I really can’t remember much about the drive during the call. Was I paying attention to the traffic and driving safely anyway, even though events weren’t imprinting on my memory? I hope so, but I wonder.

We take an annual trip to the Canadian Rockies. The drive is truly spectacular for about 6.5 hours. One year we listened to an audiobook mystery on the way. When we got there, I really couldn’t remember anything about the drive. Was I still driving safely? I hope so, but we haven’t done it since. Maybe I’m just a poor multi-tasker. Most people aren’t good at multi-tasking, but most people think they are.

I hope the guys putting a movie on the screen aren’t the same ones that don’t like the new safety features like lane keeping assist or adaptive cruise control because those features can prevent centerline crossing or rear ending incidents.

When you’re glancing at the movie, are you still glancing at on-coming traffic for the guy passing in a tight area? Are you still looking for deer browsing along the highway?

Texting is illegal in most states but people still do it all the time. Driving is like mountain climbing or scuba diving. The chances of a mistake are small, but the consequences are disastrous.

I can’t wait for widespread implementation of effective self-driving vehicles.

All this makes me glad I’m driving a 10,000 lb vehicle.

Can you imagine that day you hit the road at 10:00 at night and arrive in the morning when you wake up. Some don't like that future. I do! ( as long as I can still drive the damn thing like normal as well)

I'm waiting for motorhomes that you can say "take me to the Grand Canyon", go in the back and crack a few cold ones in front of the big screen TV, and wake up parked at the campsite.

Can you post a link on the exact product your purchased to set this up? I’m interested

As I mentioned I run one of these in another vehicle. None of these boxes are flawless, they all have problems, some worse than others. I'm on my 4th one now.

They aren't officially supported, the connection has been reverse engineered. Basically, they trick the infotainment system into thinking it is connected to an iPhone via CarPlay and then use that connection to interface with the Android OS on the box. Also, your technical support comes from the shop you purchase it from, not the manufacturer of the box. So it is good to buy from reputable shop.

I'm currently using the 8+128 6225 version of one of these and it has been the most stable:

They are available other places for better prices but, as I mentioned, make sure you buy from a reputable store, and make sure you get a US version of a box if you want to use a SIM card in it.
