Hey guys. Thanks for having me.
Hopefully posted this in the right section.
I’m currently in the market for a 2500hd with the 6.4. I’ve been looking at years 14-16. I want the 4:10 gears but really having trouble finding one. Looking to start a new construction business. Currently run a 13 tundra, best truck I have ever owned. But it’s not going to cut it anymore. I am on a budget and really don’t want a diesel.

Any advice on what to look for besides carfax and maintenance records?

What’s considered high mileage?

Any advice would be appreciated!

I would not be towing In the mountains or long trips. Flat rural area. Mostly pulling at least 12k dump trailer or equipment trailer.

1. Want to see proper maintenance records
2. If it was used for plowing I’m staying away

I can’t speak specifically to the 6.4, other guys can help with that.

Other than that just overall condition of the truck. You can tell if it was used and abused or well taken care of.

I personally have looked at used HD trucks a number of different times over the last 10 years and eventually just gave up and bought new. I couldn’t find a used one that I felt comfortable buying. HD trucks are bought to work and depending on the mileage on them you never know how badly they were beaten on. There are good ones out there I just couldn’t find one.

I wish. But no way I’m doing that right now. Not smart to spend that much right now. I did see a 2017 with 120k on the clock for a pretty good price.. might go check that out tomorrow

I'd try to get the service history of the vehicle you choose. Well maintained is a plus. One owner is a plus, multiple owners you have to ask why no one is keeping it.

I guess my son really lucked out, he bought a certified used 2018 2500 6.4 engine , 4.10 rear Tradesman crew cab with 29000 miles for 34K last October. He found it at a dealer about 100 miles away. To the O.P. don't give up, there are some good ones out there.

Thanks guys! Yes I like one owners, serviced regularly. Yeah I haven’t seen one truck with the 410 gears around me.

Does that higher tow rating for 4:10 gears include convential towing? Or does the hitch still max out around 12k?

I am not sure but his has the 5th wheel package, if that means anything.

My 2020 Ram 6.4 with 4.10 gears and 8 speed transmission.

It is rated to tow just above 16k per the Ram vin lookup tow rating site. I did a screen shot of it to document it.

However, I’d run out of payload before I got to 16k.
