Trying to decide whether to upgrade from 1500 to 3500 in a year or two

Did some actual weighing today. The heaviest possible loadout for the convention trailer is approximately 4880#, including our personal gear. Assuming a 2200# trailer (just did a 30 second search for trailers that meet my needs and that was a ballpark weight for several I saw) and a 15% pin weight, that comes out to ~1100#. The 4 of us that would be the max passengers come out to ~650#, so I should be able to make a 2500 payload work even with a 6.7, provided I don't max out the options when I eventually order and payload capacities don't decline between now and then.

Most convention trips would just be 2 of us in the cab, though, which would give us plenty of payload headroom.

Test drove this loaded 2500 6.7 MC today. I liked it! Butt dyno says the SO is a shade less peppy than the HO, but still peppier than my 1500's V6. The ride seemed to be a happy medium between the 1500 and 3500 ride, quite acceptable for DD duties.

It's got a few options I won't get, the MC being the main one, and has a 1620# payload. Based on the Ram VIN search tool, a CC specced out the way I want it will have a ~1800-1950# payload (some of the trucks I benchmarked my configuration against had additional options), which covers my heaviest possible use case.

Now I'm thinking I might wait to see if there are any substantive updates for MY21, or if there's anything confirmed for MY22 (5th gen cab, new transmission, UC 5.0, etc) and bite the bullet on a 2500 next summer/fall.

Possibly humorous anecdote--the digital speedo was set on kmh when I got in, and I didn't notice till I was driving past a speed trap on a stop and go road with a 35 mph limit and I looked down to see I was going 61. Made eye contact with the cop right after that and let's just say my heart rate sped up *a bit*. :D

I'm pretty happy with my CTD 2500. I had a Frontier before this that had a payload of around 800#s. My Laramie has a 2200# payload which is plenty for me. I have yet to tow over 6k with it but when the trailer or ATV or ? Is behind it, it could care less. I absolutely love all the torque, exh brake, rear coils, vented seats, silence of this truck. I had a '97 & '04 1500 & cant believe how far these trucks have come. There's still room for improvement starting with the floppy hood tho!!!

Off topic...but the floppy hood. Turn the bump stops at the front of the engine bay. It is simple to do and costs nothing. It may or may not help...it helped with mine

@Habu987

If going with the 2500 drive the 6.4l. You might be surprised how well it works and will give the extra payload.

It won't get diesel MPG but can use cheaper fuel and can hit 18s on the highway
