Transmission (?) Shudder?

MDS is already off, via gear selector. It does this with or without MDS on/off. I do utilize MDS when on the highway.

PW has about 1200 miles on it now. Seems like some days the shudder is much more prominent than others. Majority of the time, it is there in low RPMs and lower speeds. But even when cruising at 40-70, it can sometimes be felt on acceleration.

Just recently added a RSI Smartcap, iKamper and a Rigd Megafit tire carrier w/a 37" spare. It almost seems like the shudder is worse. I am wondering if the added weight on the hitch is magnifying the front to rear shake/shudder? Have also had a prominent and audible "clunking" when downshifting into 2nd gear (maybe its 3rd?), when vehicle is slowing down and coming to a stop.

I have noticed this same trans (ZF 8HP) can be found in some BMWs and they have forum threads/videos showing how to reset the trans. module. I am wondering if there is a way to do this for our trucks? Seems like some people also say the diff. fluid being changed has made this go away. Wondering if I should have a dealer look at it. I was going to get the oil changed anyway. Have a 3,500 mile road trip coming up and I'd really like to get this resolved before hand.

Any advice, ideas or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Following…I recently experienced a “shudder” on a recent drive, definitely not to your extent. Mine felt almost like it was trying to shift into a gear but couldnt, it was very brief and i couldnt replicate it after. The “clunk” I do get from time to time when im coming to a stop more so when coming from full speed to a stop i.e. freeway to an exit ramp.

I've got a '22 PW, I occasionaly get a clunk on downshift. I think I've read that's pretty common.

I've recently started to get a "shudder" exactactly as you describe - low acceleration, low rpm, mostly low speeds - but can occasionally feel it on the highway.

I don't see the RPM fluctuate when it happens, but it almost feels as if when my fuel pump was going out on my old truck (but the RPM would show that on the old truck). Which has me thinking transmission also; I've asked my dealer to check for any software updates, but they need it all day to do that they said.

I get the same in my ‘21 model. I’m guessing the “clunk” is common?
Ive read a few threads of people experiencing it, so that was my assumption as well. Figured it was just one of the quirks of the transmission.

Yeah, I watch the RPMs as well as see no indication of fluctuations there.

As mentioned in my original post, I think the extra weight was intensifying the shuddering/rocking. Last night I installed these Timbren rubber spring things and that definitely picked the rear end back up and reduced the shudder feeling. Shudder is still there, intermittently but extra weight absolutely intensifies it. The Timbrens are not meant to be a permanent solution, for me. My rear Kings (from Thuren) have not arrived yet, but once they do I will install those along with Carli R2 springs. But with the amount of weight I am going to have in the rear for this long road trip, I really needed something to help support the factory springs, shuddering or not.

Yeah; I'm looking at Thuren stage 2/3 or Carlie Backcountry to level out the ride and improve the quality. Torn on the R1 or R2 b/c I don't throw stuff in the back often; but when I do it's a cord of wood with our camping gear or pull our trailer that's ~1,000lbs at the tounge

If you're not going to have hundreds of pounds of weight in the bed regularly, I wouldn't suggest the R2s. Thuren Stage 3 Kings with factory springs and a Thuren track bar would be plenty. And for the wood/gear/trailer hauling, I'd highly recommend those Timbren things. Install in about 10 minutes and uninstall just as easily.

I've got a 2022 PW with 5800 miles and have had the sub 4th gear downshift clunk since new. I installed 35s upon delivery and my truck was fine until ~5k miles and has since developed the "shudder" on light throttle acceleration, generally between 3-4th but occasionally between 4-5.

I had a 2019 PW and the transmission was flawless. I am guessing the shudder has to do with programming to save 1/10th of a MPG.

Hopefully they will deliver a software update to cure both issues.

Dropping my truck off on 07OCT for shudder and hard downshift. Will report back. "Feels" like torque converter shudder to me.
