Trailer Information- electrical connection

Is there any way to know if your trailer is electrically connected? My Tundra had an icon on the dash. The only thing I can find on the 2500 is trailer mileage which if incrementing I assume tells you the trailer is connected. That isn't good enough. Am I missing something? It obviously knows when a trailer is attached. Also, is there possibly any notice when a trailer becomes electrically detached. That would be really nice to know as I once had a piece of a tire rip my cable out and I wasn't aware of it. Should be a minor amount of code. Trailer attached to trailer detached- sound warning- display notification on dash. So what if it goes off when you intend to disconnect the cable.

Yes, it will tell you if the trailer plug becomes disconnected. It does not have an icon to tell you if it is connected. But there are ways to tell. I do not have a 2019 so I can not verify if it still works exactly the same as a 4th gen or not.

I always run with my headlights on, so each time I check my mirrors I look for the lights on the trailer. Still do not trust electric nannies enough to do my job for me.

But if it becomes disconnected there will be a big red trailer with a slash through it, a message saying trailer disconnected and a very loud chime sound.

When I connect a trailer with brakes I test the trailer brakes with the controller as i pull away. When I am hooking up a trailer, I turn on the flashers to test the turn/stop lamps on the trailer. Visual confirmation is the best way by far.

I’m talking about running down the road. Of course we do a pre-flight check. Sometimes bright sunlight makes it hard to see the running lights, so it is nice to have a dashboard visual indicator. At least there is a disconnect warning which is great.

Just note that the truck doesn’t know if a 4-way plug is plugged in. That only works if the trailer has brakes.

I figured it was known how to know you plugged it in. Why I wrote "but there are ways to tell"

Also, if you have parksense...it will shut off when the 7 pin is plugged in...hence letting you know it is plugged in.

And while driving, if it unplug, the above mentioned will definitely let you know.

I have made two trailer trips. The first parksense turned off. The second in two directions it didn’t. I had to manually turn it off. I’m not sure why there was a difference other than a malfunction or it is sensitive as to when you plug it in. I generally don’t plug in when the engine is running although I may have on one of those trips.

One other note regarding the nanny trailer disconnect light. It will not extinguish until the vehicle is shut off and restarted. I frequently tow a cargo trailer that gets moved and moved again and I ultimately disconnect with the truck running. The light will remain on as long as the truck remains running.

Thanks again for all the info. It would be my preference that it stay on. The only time I have experienced a disconnect was on a 5 lane highway and I sure as heck was ready to get off of it and turn off my engine so I could get things squared away.
