TPMS (TIS) sensors for trailer (SOLVED - see 1st post) aka TTPMS - Trailer TPMS

Thanks you all for the info this helps a great deal!

Still working on factory TTPMS "range issue" causing config failure with long 5th Wheel...

After removing the receiver from my truck, I found that my receiver (Part#: 68375990AB) has been superseded to 68375990AC.

Can't find any info as to why, but I ordered one anyway because they're cheap. Possible the newer model will have stronger reception and resolve the issue.

If not, I will be relocating the receiver from behind license plate to underneath trailer closer to the axles ala the Ford TTPMS solution which uses same equipment & connectors - except it actually works!

UPDATE: Yesterday, I received the updated TTPMS Receiver (68375990AC) which I ordered on the off-chance that it would resolve my TTPMS range issue. It didn't.

Now, I decided to use the Ford Camera kit - that includes a harness that relocates their TTPMS to the trailer through their identical 12-pin AUX Camera connector. Photos of their wired camera's image
also appear to be good quality - unlike the RAM's...

I contacted Bryan at Nichols to help me with rebuilding the connector pin-outs and also build me a one-piece camera extension cable to the camera location at the top rear of my 5th Wheel.

The RAM 12-pin female connector in the bed of my '20 has 4 pins open (2,3,4,&5) that I can use to extend the 4 pins of the TTPMS receiver onto Ford's male connector and harness - which will move the receiver about 10 - 12'
closer to my trailer's axles.

I might get to try it this weekend if the shipment arrives.

When you get it and install, take as many pics as you can. Was the ford camera system comparable in price to the ram version

The more I read about this TTPMS system, the more I'm thinking, when I actually start hauling my 5th wheel around next year, that I'm going to go with something like this: https://smile.amazon.com/EEZTire-TPMS-Pressure-Monitoring-System-TPMS10/dp/B009BF9S4E. First of all, on a 3500 the TPMS is actually just a TIMS. And, as well, the OEM only does pressure and not temp. Yeah, it's nice that the OEM doesn't add any clutter to the dash, but I'd probably end up with clutter anyway, since I'll need an RV gps (or at least a phone gps), since the OEM gps doesn't do RV essential stuff like low bridge warnings. But gosh, it seems like a lot of work to get the OEM TTPMS working, even if it was ordered with the truck!

I'm worried about the same thing when we finally upgrade from this 35' to the monster 48', if it will be able to pick up the wheel sensors that much further back and if not what will I do to remedy.
Duly noted on the navigation not having a setting for over heighth rvers, that is definitely a big downer

While it was fun being a small part of figuring this one out, now that I went to the expense of adding everything to my truck, and found not only will my TireMinder sensors not work with it, but there are features unavailable with the factory system, I'll just keep using my TireMinder.

Factory:
  • No temp
  • No disconnect feature
  • No aftermarket sensors (perhaps Mopar coded OE-style sensors work?)
  • Range issues for some?

TireMinder:
  • Shows temps
  • Runs on my phone that's always in a dashtop cradle anyway
  • I can still monitor the TireMinder screen when running Android Auto
  • Offers disconnect mode when I'm not running with either the boat or fifth wheel
    • Not a big deal if you don't double tow
  • Comes with a repeater that I have mounted midships on my 5th wheel to pick up the boat tire sensors

One nit: TireMinder hasn't updated their app in years and refuses to allow their screen to follow the phone screen (night) mode so it's WHITE all the time. Annoying and they blew me off when I suggested a change. At night, I have to view something else and just depend on audible alerts. Strangly, they have a new kit with a color monitor that also works with a phone "app" that shows a dark screen.
For the complaints about the NAV, only Purpose built GPS and Truck or RV Nav Apps offer "trucker" or RV route guidance, so I wouldn't expect that from a factory automotive system, truck or not.

One final thought. If we knew what the PID for each tire pressure sensor was, it could be added to something like Torque for real-time monitoring off board. I poked around a bit and am not seeing anything for RAM.

I am a newbie (I just joined the forum). Thank you in advance for all of the work you guys have done in documenting this add on OEM feature. I have a 2019 RAM 3500. I also have an aftermarket EeZTire system for my 35ft toyhauler. From this last message it seems like even if I buy the OEM parts (TTPMS receiver, interface module, etc), it will NOT work with my existing aftermarket TPMS. Furthermore, the OEM sensors does NOT read the temperature either.

I wasn't able to get my TireMinder sensors to pair. The suspected reason is that the TPMS wheel sensors have to have a proper MOPAR OEM ID code range. I doubt the aftermarket repeaters would work with it either.

The OEM TTPMS does not show tire temp.

Thank you very much! I am less inclined to add the TTPMS NOT only because of the additional costs to add the MOPAR sensors (6 more in my case), but I am more concerned that it will NOT work because of the reported range issues. I have a 37ft 5th wheel trailer.
I am glad someone reported these range issues.

I would like to NOW focus on the trailer camera and the outfitter switches that the truck did NOT come with. :-(

No reception issues on my 35' fiver on the ttpms recieve. We have several threads posted regarding the aux trailer cam. If you want full details, chime onto the thread " what happened to RICH " , I had bought it and returned it and was very disappointed

I see Rich. So you were able to successfully add the TTPMS on your 35ft trailer, without sensor range issues. BUT you had to buy the Mopar sensors (or did you use aftermarket sensors)? So there is hope for me to add this feature and flash the truck using the AlphaOBD.
let me jump into the Aux trailer cam thread.

Only mopar sensors work with the factory setup.

Negative, I didn't do the add on after the fact. I added it to my build and 4 wheel valve stem sensors came with truck in a bag in back seat. I had a dealer instal them on my trailer wheels and I programmed them in about 4 minutes flat. They have worked perfect with out trouble

The range issues are related to the distance from the back bumper (where the receiver is mounted) to the axle location on the trailer. Different length trailers have different axle locations. This is similar to the need to add a repeater to the aftermarket TPMS systems - like TireMinder.
On my 38' 5th Wheel the front axle is 20' from the truck's rear bumper (sensors would sometimes register). The rear axle is 23' from the truck's rear bumper (sensors would never register.)
When I removed the wheels from the trailer and rolled them up 6' closer to the truck, all the sensors would register and TTPMS would configure.
Once registered and wheels moved back onto the trailer, the system lost contact with all the sensors.
I'm working on moving the receiver from the truck, wired through the 12-pin Aux Camera connector and onto the underside of the 5th Wheel near the axle area. This is what Ford does with their TTPMS.

Just a SWAG, but using a Ford 12-pin cable harness from Nichols, one could probably move that receiver back to the trailer with a few pin swaps, perhaps a Molex connector swap at most. Some enterprising wiz could possibly even womp up a zero effort DIY adapter cable.

I've heard of a WAG, but not a SWAG. Can you be more specific???

FEW ISSUES:
The only thing I see is that the pin swaps/additions need to start on the truck's body harness leading to the back of the 12-pin connector (can't FED-X the truck to Bryan). Pins 2,3,4 & 5 are open & perfect for rerouting the 4-wires feeding the TTPMS receiver. Unfortunately I don't have the special tools to pull the pins for a swap or the additional pins needed to add wires to the harness. I'm sure Bryan at Nichols can advise where to buy them so I can make a prototype for him to build.

Even though they look exactly the same, the Ford 12-pin connector to the trailer-side Aux Camera & TTPMS devices use different pins for their setup (of course) and the unused pins are blocked in the connector.

Lastly, it's impossible to make a jumper cable from our TTPMS to the 12-pin connector because, although the 4-pin female side is part of our truck's harness, the male side you need only exists as the circuit board in the TTPMS receiver. So it looks like cutting the wires and butt connectors will be the "jumper" for this mod.

After relocating the TTPMS, I am interested in trying the Ford Trailer Camera to see if it's better than RAM's. They both use same number of wires (4) when you disregard RAM's shield cable. Ford uses a foil wrap over the separate video + and - wires for their shield - instead of the 5th wire that RAM uses.. Ford trailer camera screen shots look much better in "photos of screens". Of course, we'll have to see how it compares to that picture of Mars someone posted. Ha Ha.

Now that's great info tight there. Pretty much all what I had understood already, so when we were debating yesterday and somebody made the comment about just using the ford 12 pin plug like it was old news. I was like, were have I been, I felt like I knew that it wasn't just plug and play without some sort of manipulation or tweaking. That's what I'm trying to stay away from. Just want to plug it in and go and not spend $600

The female ttpm connector on the truck harness is TE Connectivity 1-967640-1. It is a wire to device, wire to board, AND wire to wire connector. It’s male counterpart to build a jumper is 1-967584-1.

It's a WAG, but Scientific. ;)

All good points.

Are the unused pins permanently blocked? They usually just have a hard plug/seal in them. So maybe it's not PNP, but could be connected to the existing bumper harness, or even routed out near the 12/7-pin and connected externally.

I'm just spit-balling as I honestly haven't dug into it far enough yet. Too busy either vacationing or working crazy projects, all my spare time is spent wasting away online.
