Towing with new 6.4L

Appreciate the post, and I hope my post didn't make this political, didn't mean to. Back to towing ...

I really enjoy this thread because my wife and I have talked about doing the camper thing, just have never waded in. I would enjoy the aspect of bringing home with us, can easily take stuff that I'd enjoy having on trips. I'm not really interested in campground to campground every few days trips, would prefer to go somewhere for a week and stay put. We'll see if it happens but reading all this helps understand a lot more about it. I figure I already have the truck ...
I prefer having the camper staying in hotels or Airbnb's. My wife, not so much. We have 2 little puppies and I think it's easier for them with the camper. If you have room to park it at home, it's so much nicer than having to store it. Our next trip is in May. We're going to do 3 days at Lake Powell and then three days at Moab. We don't have a slide, so more than a week starts to feel claustrophobic.

I spend 4-6 months working out of my camper in the summers on subdivisions. 16' box is tight, but I have a good sized bathroom, queen bed, ect. And if its warm I use the outside kitchen. Thats a game changer for sure.

We got a Rockwood withOUT a dinette but has the kitchen bar type set up. We love it. I spend my mornings in there. Ours is flat but I can reach the coffee maker have plugs, out of the way, can look out the door and see the dogs, turn the TV a bit and see it... So glad we didn't get a dinette... We got one with a "private" sofa/bedroom/slideout but the overall TT is still only 29.9 feet. Empty nesters. It's a 24 ultra lite 2616BH. I love this one and that little private bedroom pic... They only made ours for two years 24/25 glad we got one. I guess they didn't sell well, but we also scored right at a 50% reduction off MSRP. It has three slides feels much more like a fifth wheel lots of space...AND storage, but the storage is a bit odd. We got used to it fast. https://forestriverinc.com/rvs/print/rockwood/2616BH/9654
For us the dinette was a must. Ours has a full size queen bed but there is the option to choose a murphy bed that turns into a nice sofa (which I like but my wife does not). I think the murphy option and dinette hits the sweet spot.

My wife's daughter was born on her birthday 46 years ago. Every year they spend the day together, and this year they went up to Sedona for a week. So the puppies and I went up to Lake Roosevelt for a couple of days. We drove the Apache Trail (Hwy 88) from the Roosevelt Dam over to Tortilla Flat. Not for the faint of heart, but very beautiful scenery and I thought worth the drive. 20260210_095246.jpg20260210_095139.jpga0c9f5b1-769d-4903-ab1a-158f3a2c1459.jpg

Happy looking pups! Why the step ladder?

I'm used to using it when I had my 1500 so this old man could get in the back of the truck easily. My 2500 has the bed step, so I can probably consider weaning myself off from taking it.
I haven't been using my bed step much because it hurts my knee more to extend and contract it, it is really stiff even though I've tried pressure washing and then white grease on the hinge points. I love it in theory just wished it moved easier.

My bed step seems to work very well. I had a left hip revision done September 2024, and I'm able to climb in and out of my truck so much better.

I found gel injections for my knees every 6 months much more effective than pressure washing and grease.

The 3.73 vs 4.10 really ends up being personal preference unless you intend to exceed the GCWR of the 3.73(21500).

The 4.10 gets you up to 24000.

Next, if you haven't towed with either, then considering the 1500 bunch tow this much...it will be much more pleasant than that.

If you are going to be climbing steep grades everytime you tow, get the 4.10.

If you have no hills, 3.73 will be just as good.

If the camping is just a few times a year, again 3.73...if you tow as often as you just drive around...get the 4.10.

The new 8 speed is to make the 6.4l really wake up...so 3.73 will be an even better match.

Once again it is personal preference if you are under 21500 GCWR...the 4.10 isnt going to make the truck world's different and the 3.73 really isnt going to get you any better or worse mileage.

I said I would not be getting the 3.73...but I did on my newest addition...it had what I wanted and at a great price...so I compromised...haven't had any issues with that decision.

But if you are buying new, and even though the discounts seem great...get the 8speed and enjoy not having to wonder what could have been.

Good luck.
I tow 11,960 with 4.10's. Often in the Colorado mountains. No problems. When I was shopping I couldn't find 1 truck with that gearing. Finally just ordered what I wanted.

Good call on the engine. A few of those Chinese 2-3 ton machines are now coming spec'd with Yanmar or Kubota diesels.
I ended up buying a new Rippa R18-5 Pro with a D902 Kubota engine. Digs effortlessly and it is smooth with true pilot controls, load sensing valves, piston pump and hidden travel motors. It is a real 2 ton machine weighing a few pounds over 4,000 lbs. So far so good. $18k delivered. On the photo you can see the tracks were retracted. They extend to 51.5 inches wide and they total length is about 61 inches hand measured.

That sounds like a great little machine. $18k isn’t bad. Parts are readily available? Who services it?

I’m tractor shopping but would much rather have a mini and rent a track steer when needed to move material.
