Hi
I am looking at buying a 2024 Ram Rebel 2500 to tow a 15000 5th wheel, with a max weight of 18000 lbs.
Can a Cummins equipped Rebel 2500 handle that trailer? The ram trucks website is showing a 14K pound towing capacity with only 9K lbs of 5th wheel capacity, but the dealer that’s trying to sell me that Rebel says those numbers are for the gas hemi engine.
I definitely don’t want to buy the wrong truck for the job - can anyone confirm if a Rebel is up to handling that trailer? Thank you!

No. You need a 3500 since the pin weight would be a little excessive on a 2500

This is from 2019 brochure that I have, later years may have slightly improved.
2500 gas ~ 17k lbs
2500 diesel ~ 19k lbs (theoretical, truck would run out of payload way before towing capacity)

3500 SO ~ 20k+ lbs
3500 HO ~ 4-5k more than the SO
Above is the reason why I recommended the HO for his 18k lbs trailer, people tend to collect junk and the SO would come too close to towing capacity, also 68rfe aren't known for their reliability and longevity, I wouldn't put a 18k lbs trailer behind it.

Thank you all. I’m disappointed that the dealer would try to push that 2500 for this job. I appreciate the insights very much. Will be looking for a 3500 with the HO Cummins. Seems the 2500 would be over worked and could actually be a safety issue with this 5th wheel. And I think the Rebel’s tow and payload capacities are a bit reduced from the other 2500 trims. 18000 lbs is the GVWR, it has a 14750 lb dry weight, but sounds like this would be way too close for comfort.

Im not sure how urgently you need to get a new truck but worth noting if you get a 2025 there is no SO/HO - all powertrains are the same. If you go 2024 and older, then id make sure youre getting a HO

As a reference our 2024 Tradesman 3500 4x4 Crew Cab LB SWB 6.7L HO Cummins has a 4,074 lb payload capacity.

I know the Power Wagons had softer springs for off-roading so that was part of what reduced their payload. Perhaps that is similar on the Rebel?

I think it’s similar, but from all I’ve read, the Rebel is supposed to be more setup for towing than the power wagon, but still a little less so than the other trims.

For '23-24 the gas Rebel has the same towing and payload specs as the other gas 2500s. The diesel Rebel has lower specs than other diesel 2500s. We've not yet been able to figure out why.

If it's possible, get a dually for that kind of weight.
