I have had some sort of 4x4 since I got my driver's license and have never had to use chains, but since it is the law to carry them, I have had a set with me. I drive over some mountain passes sometime in the winter and go skiing a few times, but don't go off roading or anything. Chains are required sometimes, but I have never been up when they were required on 4x4s, although it can happen. What is a good chain to carry for this truck that will likely never get used? I have the stock tires on the 20 inch rims.

I just buy 3 peak mountain snowflake tires. Driven through some big snow storms in flagstaff without chains….but have always had cables just in case. The scc super z8:

I didn't even realize it, but I actually had those Z chains for my old truck. Never used them. I guess I'll get the same thing for this truck then just to keep in there just in case. And although I will likely never use them, I may as well ask it here: on a 4x4, do they go on the front or rear tires? I am sure there will be some sort of debate because I have looked into this in the past and have heard arguments for both.

If you're going to carry chains, get a decent set of chains, not cables. That way you'll have em if you ever need them. Cheap insurance. I carry v bar style, laclede.

Rears get chains and look at Mcmaster Carr they have decent chains for great prices

Depends on use. If use on road get a good set of actual chains.

Even in Montana. I run 3peak AT's. I've only ever chained up off-road. So I run v bars or cleats. Running cleats for current truck They will rattle your teeth out on pavement though. Even if it's s own covered.

Go to a truck stop and get semi-truck chains that will fit the width and general size. Cut the tails to fit. They are heavier/better chains and generally less expensive than going to NAPA for passenger vehicle grade chains. They also have cams for tightening and you usually don’t have to put bungees on them to keep them tight.
