Test Drove Ram, Chevy, Ford

Guess no one works on their trucks?
I keep my vehicles for a long time and now that my extended warranty is up on my 2019 so doing all the work on it myself from now on.
Why I went with RAM and not the other 2? It's working on V vs inline 6 that makes a difference. Also cab can stay on unlike Ford (GM??) for most of work.

We put 225,000 plus on our 5500 chassis cabs that put in work pulling 36' to 40' goose neck tool trailers . I have 2 here currently that are over that number and one at 126,000 miles. The others are lower currently. Cummins has us locked in with RAM for those work horses! As long as RAM doesn't do anything silly and change the Cummins relationship; they are ok. I just hope the two of them don't ever 'mess' up that relationship.

My daily, I am trading at about 100,000.

Interesting. I thought Ram had stopped offering the gas option on the higher trim HD's a couple of years ago. But it looks like it's back for '25.
Has anyone actually been able to place an order for a gas HD on a Laramie or above?

My understanding is that were still in the order guide for previous years but were never opened up for ordering in the system.

Our company has a 2019 3500 Mega Cab with out rear air and a 2020 Mega Cab with rear air and they ride exactly the same empty.

My own needs are some where in between the 2500 / 3500. ( mostly for payload ) I have wondered about the idea of taking a leaf spring out of the 3500 mega SRW so it rides on the air bag more and less on the harsher springs when empty.

On RAM's website in the build and price section, when you put in a limited longhorn 4x4 with no options and gas; it shows a price of $78,335. When you change the option to add megacab and nothing else, it forces the diesel option and the price is now $92,445. That makes it a no brainer for me to go with a GM for almost $20,000 less. I have been happy with my RAM and will continue using the RAM 5500's for our work, but they need to update their cab.
Why must they update there cab?

Regarding the cab for me and the consensus seems to be related to the following. This is when comparing the non-megacab trucks. These are the things that come to mind, but there are whole discussions about it on this forum.
  • Telescopic wheel
  • Flatter floor
  • More room behind the front seats for back seat passengers/car seats
  • Seat placement/height of the front seats relative to the cab
All you have to do is look at the 1500 RAM truck cabs and see what would be great on the 2500 and up trucks.

And by the way, they don't 'have to upgrade', but I am pretty sure they are losing some sales to the other makes based on that factor. Many more farmers and people that daily their trucks in my area are going to gas as opposed to diesel so that takes away the edge that Cummins gave RAM when choosing which brand to buy.

The new front end styling is a whole other issue that is personal preference...

I was in a GMC Denali 2500 recently. No question to me that the back seat configuration is better, the flat floor is a significant factor IMO. And I don't like the new front end, it's like they took a really great looking front and someone decided they needed to go more vertical in addition to horizontal lines. Vertical is Jeep, didn't need the added busy look, again IMO.

I don't think a major re-design is needed, just some attention to function as compared to the 2 competitors.

I test drove a Silverado 3500 Duramax LTZ earlier this week. I will say the driver seat felt like it was made of concrete. I was also not a fan of how the gauges were presented with no overall at a glance gauge summary for fuel, DEF, trans temp, oil temp, coolant temp. I did like the head up display and the orientation of the infotainment screen.

Buy one and drive it a while. I bet you money you will decide to leave it alone.
