Tailgate wiring connectors

This is a little bit of a rant. I frequently remove my tailgate to haul my slide in camper. There are three connectors that have to be disconnected, the main multi-wire plug on the connector bracket, the backup camera coax connector on the connector bracket, and a two wire connector that isn't attached to the connector bracket.

The paper owner's manual just says to disconnect the wires. The online video only addresses the main connector and just says to depress the locking tab to remove. The downloadable manual has some more detail but none have instructions on how to disconnect the the two wire plug. I figured out through trial and error that there is a red locking pin that needs to be slid back to allow depressing in the black locking tab so the plug can be disconnected. The problem is the two wire harness is too short and you can't pull the plug through the hole to easily access it. There is no way to disconnect it without removing the tailgate from the pivot points to get enough working room. All the instructions have you disconnecting the plugs before removing the tailgate. So I leave the tailgate straps connected, disconnect the tailgate from the pivot points, rest the tailgate bottom on the bumper, and have my wife hold the tailgate with a few inches of working room to fight with the connector which difficult to remove even with the locking tab depressed.

Well, the last time I removed the tailgate I broke the two wires off at the female connector that is part of the wiring harness attached to the truck. I couldn't find any instructions online to depin that connector so I mangled one of the female pins figuring out how to remove it. I managed to get the mangled pin back to close to its original shape and remove the other pin without damage. I managed to solder some extension wires on to the stubs on the pins (these wires are very small and easily broken) and verified the pins had continuity with the pins in the mating plug but I don't have confidence that I'm not going to have problems.

Does anyone know what that two wire plug is for? I'm thinking the tailgate open warning light but, if it is that, it must know the tailgate is removed because the light isn't illuminated. Is that plug available as a pigtail or connector kit, or do I need to buy a whole harness?

I'm thinking that the next time I take my truck to the dealer I'm going to ask if I could get it covered under warranty. I realize that I broke it but if it is my fault they should be able demonstrate how to properly disconnect the plugs following the instructions in the manual.

Can’t help on the wiring question, but appreciate the heads up as my 2026 should be here by end of month and the first thing I’ll be doing is installing Torklift anchors and pulling the tailgate.

How are you dealing with camera relocation?

Thanks

I purchased a 68144068AC camera off Amazon and a Fakra Z extension cable and mounted the camera on the back of my camper. I didn't get a housing since the camera is waterproof, I just made a bracket for it. The part number is different from what Ram calls for but it works. I have surround view cameras which are different from the standard tailgate camera.

I thought I'd give this a bump, I'm still looking for an inexpensive 2 pin connector that I use to repair the truck side of my harness, I've attached photos. Currently the only option RAM has provided is to replace the whole truck rear harness which is expensive and, unless the design has been changed, will just get broken again. Basically, the harness is too short to allow you to get a good grip on the connector when disconnecting the connector so wires wind up breaking after several removals. When I do a Google search all that I find is other people with the same problem. My other option would be to replace the connector with a generic 2 pin connect but that would require me to also modify the tailgate harness. I've attached pictures of the connector.

Below is a link to a video for removing the tailgate on a 2026 RAM HD. The video for a 2024 tailgate is the incorrect configuration for my 2024 truck.
Notice at 1:05 seconds how little the connector sticks out the opening. The demonstrator just wiggles the connector and it pops out. My connector requires a lot of force to disconnect. I contacted RAM Cares for help and a part number of a repair pigtail but the response was "Based on our findings, the wiring harness damage was caused by improper removal of the tailgate. The type of damage present is consistent with the harness being pulled or stressed during removal rather than a defect in materials or workmanship" with no part number for a repair connector. Well, yes, but the connector is impossible to disconnect without stressing the wires.

Does anyone know where I could get a repair connector?

The good news is that the auto industry tends to use connectors from less than 10 "types".

You can buy them for instance from digikey but here is a supplier that has a visual view of a number of them.

The bad news is that you really want to own the right crimping tool, and they are kind of criminally priced.

What tends to happen is that people will buy a connector / crimp tool style that they like and as they go through time, just replace the existing connector with what they do regularly.

Buy enough parts to practice first on some random wire before trying it on the truck.

I will poke around some more as well if you are patient.

Still looking but I think it is among these links.

Deutch type connector - just because of history I tend to use these for water proof connectors.

These anderson SB50s might work - would need to double check the wire size.

At least some of these can be purchased - just the connector but also with wires attached if you need to lengthen it.

Believe me, I've looked. I haven't been able to find a connector that simultaneously has all the below features (in reference to the picture):

The notch in the white part on the right side.
The "L" features where the two female pins are located having the same orientation (not sure if it matters but may effect pin location).
The clip configuration/location at the top.
The grooved feature/configuration on the left side.

I used Google Lens to do a search and the only pictures it found with the same features were in posts from other people with the same problem looking for the same connector.

It almost looks like a hybrid of some kind.

I has features of the deutch AT and features of Molex, but I didn't see it on either website - at least during a quick search.

Is there any indication that it is related to communication - such as canbus type operation ?

If it isn't plugged in, what stops working ?

Is there anything that prevents replacing both the truck side and tail gate side of the connector to something else ?

hmmm - the connector AI I tried also failed completely.

Starting to wonder if it is a parking sensor.
