Okay, so this may seem silly, but does anyone else have issues with the tailgating bouncing when left open?
My old truck had a nice heavy tailgate and no assist lift or springs, never seemed to bounce. This one is great being nice a light until you go over a bump and it bounces. Transporting light objects like roof flashing and it is a real issue.

...and the damper goes on behind the PASSENGER side taillight on the Heavy Dutys, On the 1500s, it's on the DRIVERS side. Same part number. I watched the YouTube install but didn't catch it was on a 1500. Ordered the part, The dealer website said "not compatible' , it was short coin so I figured what the hek, I'll order it any-a-who. Pulled the DRIVERS side taillight off and all the air left my body. NO MOUNTING TABS. Just for giggles, I pulled the PASSENGERS side taillight and thar' they was. 2 minutes and long reach whatever ya got and it was in. Snap the bottom one on first, raise the tailgate to bring the top mount to the damper and you are done. The ends snap on just like any other piston you'd replace say for a hatch or hatch glass. Pull the clip out but not off. You are done. (2 screws on the inboard side of the taillights the pull the whole assembly backwards towards you so you don't break the slide on/off clips.) Release the tailgate latch, let it go and go make a sandwich waiting for it to drop. NICE! Part Number: 68362518AA Damper, Strut about $25.00-$30.00

Now this is all based on my experience ordering for my 2019 Ram 2500 BigHorn Crewcab 6.7 4x4 8'bed.
I went back to double check numbers and such before I posted. It now shows it's compatible and the picture shows it's on the DRIVER side. It's that cylinder/shock looking thing all the way to the left in the picture.I'd pull off the taillight assembly to double check but my bet is on the PASSENGER side. Hope all this dribble helps.

I thought the damper only worked down, and offered little or no resistance going up?

Is it enough to keep the gate from bouncing up?

The up part I can't attest to and will agree that it shouldn't. I know the down part is now at the mercy of your patience. This from RAMTRUCKS.COM : " A strut connecting the rear box pillar to the tailgate serves as a damper, allowing for easier opening and closing. " Maybe a ratchet strap around the tailgate with the hooks under each bumper end cinched down and then load on top of that, or a bungee off either end of the tailgate sticker pins and down to the bumper.

You could also get a spare couple of the tailgate cables (from wherever), the ones you disconnect when you remove the tailgate, clip the "keyed" ends onto their pins and come up with whatever length you would need to secure them to the hitch pin holes. I'm sure you have this and other ideas, I'm just Doc Brown'ing it from my comfy chair.

Could always buy/build one of them fancy tailgate supports. Shame they went to cables when you could just put a lock on the old flat steel arms.

I pulled the left tail light on my 2019 3500, and the lower mount for the damper is there. However, I couldn't see one for the upper part. does the damper come with an upper mount, or am I missing something?

On my 2020 3500, the tailgate has the mount on the right, and the second solid mount is below that.

Well I can confirm this is the case. The damper does nothing for up travel. It only makes the already assisted tailgate even slower going down. I pulled it back off.

Sad. The tailgate drops great but the assist for up is a bit much and is what is causing this combined with the light tailgate.

Any other thoughts or has anyone come up with a way to mount the old style bars? I came from GM so I've always had cables anyway but never this bouncing problem.

You can get out your wallet and spend an (IMHO) egregious amount on these bars, or make your own if able.

Thanks for the help. Must be disxelic, because I apparently can't tell right from left. As you mentioned, behind the right tail light were the attachment balls for the damper. Got the damper and was a really easy job. Works like a dream!
