Studded winter tires

With studded tires I would definitely buy a 2nd set of wheels dedicated for these tires.
These wheels would be 18inch and I bet there are good winter tires for that size.
Agreed. Makes swapping so much easier. I lucked out and found another set of 75th wheels and tires for IIRC 1600 bucks. Kept the wheels and sold the almost new tires for around 800 bucks. I felt pretty good about it and now have identical wheels for winter and summer

I do agree I think the Duratrac is probably the best snow rated AT tire out there - at least that I’ve had. The General Grabber AT/X is also very good and also studdable.

The thing I never liked was the Duratrac never was great in wet traction. Had a set on my 02 WJ and my PW and when it rained out it seemed they just spun more than they should.

They have the bonus of being an awesome looking tire too

Up until this week I’ve never driven Duratrac’s, but I ended up with a ‘20 Rebel that has them. I was super excited because I’ve only heard good things.

Worst AT I’ve ever driven, without question. Makes the trashforce HT look like a good tire.

They are loud, have no traction, and handle poorly. Slip and spin constantly, even on dry roads. If I hit a small patch of ice the truck gets sideways, regardless of speed and heading.

So a couple caveats. I don’t see a 3PMSF label on them. Are there two versions? Date code shows 7/20, maybe they are OE and a different mold? 56K miles on the truck, so not sure about their average life. Probably 6-7/32” remaining, which seems high for the miles but the date code looks OE. Good visible siping and decent tread. They are slightly overinflated per Ram. The truck wants 55/45 and that’s too much for a LRE on a 1500. I’ve aired it down to 45/35, and have a TPMS warning. No difference from the 60/50 that was in it when I picked it up, which surprised me. If it were my truck I’d be at 30/25 right now, but it’s a rental.

Needless to say I’m beyond unimpressed, but are there different versions of this tire?

There are 2 versions yes when i order mine i always get the winter rated ones they have stud holes in them. that millage they were likely OEM i usually get 60-70k miles per set

I have had good luck with non-studded (Blizzak LT) snows here in the PNW (drive passes on a weekly basis) if I would have guaranteed snow/ice on the road studded be a consideration, however still most of the driving is done on bare pavement and really dislike studs on that.
