Stop sale on new diesels in cold climates? DEF freezing

I will say that I frequent Ram Forums and haven’t heard of the issue, unlike when the 13+ trucks came out with the rear filter heater deactivated.

That being said the 19-20 trucks pretty much has the CP4 to steal the show on any other issues on the interwebs.

There is only a small portion of people who use forums. And it was obviously a big enough issue that FCA came out with a TSB for it… and its more the extreme cold climates
But folks seek out and complain on forums like this when stuff like this happens. I own forums, am an Admin on a large forum and have been on forums since before the internet (usenet groups). I know how the cycle works when there is a chronic issue. I'm not saying there is not an issue, I just have doubts that it is as wide spread as you indicate it is. There does not appear to be any kind of recall/bulletin for the DEF issue on newer trucks either.

There was a TSB released last year. So it is obviously wide spread enough for FCA to take notice…

Trust me its a big issue My 19 froze and gave me limp mode count down 5 times 2 times in 2020 and 3 times last year all at -30 to -45 °c range the dealer had to drop the tank after it thawed and clean the system the last time it cost me 500$ + 2500$ to ensure it never happens again!
Was your $2500 solution a deletion? ;)

I've been in situations where a frozen def system could be pretty sketchy. I wasn't taking any chances being out where I go and be stuck with a popsicle.

I would love to go that route if they had a more reasonable solution for the 22s and if I didn’t live in California.

Thanks for the link. Some interesting info. But not a "stop sale" thing as the title of this thread says.

I still don't think it's a very common issue though, given that you don't see a lot of threads about it and there is no recall.
Not a lot of places see the extreme cold required so i think that plays a part. Myself i have talked to lots of local people running these trucks and they also had freeze ups they took to complaining on FB groups which i dont even have FB. No idea about the stop sale though

I think we have established that the 2 dealers that were saying it was a stop sale because of DEF were full of sh!t. The stop sale for the transmission came out about the same time so I am guessing they were confused.

Here we go.

Brothers 2022 3500 says it about to go into limp mode. 44km remaining before it goes into speed limited mode. He drove from Alberta to interior of BC. No issues until almost at destination. DEF tank is frozen. Portion with the heating element was thawed and used during the drive. The upper portion of the def tank is solid ice. Confirmed by trying to add fluid which just spilled back out. DEF tank gauge reads zero.

Parked in heated shop over night to thaw. Confirmed thawed this morning. Problem remains. A mechanic mentioned a possible issue with ultrasonic sensor.

This truck needs to make it back to Alberta tomorrow. Will it go into limp mode after 44km on its own? Or will it go into limp mode after 44km and a shut down, restart?

Wont go in to limp mode until fuel up, extended idle or restart when the counter hits 0… it may clear if it is thawed now but it could also be the pump needs to be cleaned from crystallization now

Ok thanks. We are reading this thread. I’m out in BC with him and the truck. Let’s say the counter hits zero and he needs to fuel up. He should just keep it running while fuel up and hit the road? Just trying to figure out how to keep it from going speed limited.

Do not let it get below 1/4 tank before fueling or it will limit speed
