Looking to replace stock height shocks. Looking at the Bilstein 4600. Has anyone ran the rancho shocks on stock suspension?

I switched from the standard molar shocks to the 4600 Bilstein shocks and I like the 4600s.

The improvement might just be just due to the fact that the stock shocks were worn out.

Can't go wrong with the 4600.

You don't give a lot of detail about your truck or intended use. 5100 may also be an option, though they are "sportier," they are great for a tow pig or off road use.

One of my factory rears leaked at 5K miles and timing for a tow trip didn't allow for a dealer visit so I just upgraded to the 5100's.

I think the bils are a better choice

Truck is completely stock, have looked at the 5100 but looks like you need to have a lift of some sort, not stock height. I could be wrong on that. When I was thinking of doing the level, I would have went with the 5100. But keeping it stock so that is why I have looked at the 4600.

I like the 5100s I have them on my 97. I had the 4600s on my 2019 2500 and they were fine.

There's a thread here somewhere with all the details on extended and compressed length on the 4600 vs 5100. IIRC, it's like 3/16" longer compressed in the front. TLDR; They work on a stock truck.

I put the 5100's on my stock 23 3500. Was a great choice. Definitely firm but in a good way. My wife even noticed how it rode better on certain sections of highway. Wish I had done it before our summer trip but super happy with them.

Plus, I know this is vain, they look better on my night edition than the yellow and blue of the 4600's.

Post the part numbers of what you decide to go with. I was also looking at the 5100's for my stock suspension and assumed the "for lifted trucks" would be fine since I'm not flexing my truck out on terrain, etc.

LOL, I was thinking the silver looked better too

This is what I got from Shock Surplus.1000032431.png

I've had them on since August. They are great. Fronts were a bit more difficult to put on just due to lack of space but not bad. The rear took maybe 10 min to get both installed.

Definitely a good upgrade.

4600 offer a softer ride, 5100s are more firm and better control if towing, 5160s have a remote reservoir for better cooling and a softer more controlled ride than the 5100s. 8100 offer the best of all worlds. Seems as you step up in each step with Bilsteins the price doubles. I have 5160s on my Power Wagon and love them. 8100s on my Jeep and love them too.

Re Rancho Shocks: I've had them but found that getting under the truck to adjust the little red knobs to adapt to whatever load I might have got old pretty quick. You also have to take those knobs apart and grease them periodically - another maintenance item to add to the list of things I've got to get done.
They do have a very good warranty, but be sure you read the requirements and retain the required information in case you ever need it.

The last Rancho set I bought (for the jeep) rusted really fast. The Bilstein 5150's I had years ago on my 1500 Ram didn't seem to do that. I'm not a fan of the knob thing either. Maybe on a sports car or specialized vehicle (rock buggy, etc) the knob would be good, but not on my daily driver. :p

I bought a new 2500 Bighorn Friday and after driving 3100 miles two weeks ago in my son’s 24 with stock suspension I think a better shock would be a great upgrade. I may be interested in putting a taller Thuren coil later but would like to put the 5100’s on my truck first. It seems you are saying this is ok? Am I understanding you correctly. If so please let me know which ones you put on yours. Thanks in advance!

I recently put Rancho RS7MTs on my 2025 2500 6.4. The stock shocks were terrible on washboards even with tire pressure reduced. I've never ran Rancho before and have heard repeatedly how they don't hold up but i found them at rock auto for $56 a corner so I decided to try them out.

On previous trucks (half tons) i've run 5100s. So far I'm pretty happy with the Ranchos. Slightly firmer than stock but not quite as firm as 5100s (subjectively).

Full disclosure, I also installed a thuren sway bar up front at the same time which i know dramatically improves the ride but I can say for sure the shocks were a big improvement on their own.

Also my truck did not have the offroad shocks. They were the black standard version.

Yes, my truck is stock and they are great. No issues.
