Howdy.
A few days ago, I purchased a new '23 Ram 3500 with the 6.4 Hemi. I am planning to do a first oil change at 1K miles (still a ways out). The thing is, I have 8 quarts of the Schaeffer's Supreme 9000 0W40 oil left from when I sold my 2014 Ram 3500 with the 6.4. The Schaeffer's meets the older MS-12633 spec required by the 2014, but not the new MS-A0921 spec required since 2022. The second oil change @ 5K miles will be done with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum SRT oil with the proper MS-A0921 spec. Is there any reason I should NOT use the Schaeffer's just once?
Schaeffer's is an excellent oil, and I wouldn't be surprised if it meets the new spec already, but just hasn't been certified that way. Thoughts?

Way to early to be changing the oil both at 1k and 5k but the oil will be fine

Why stop at 1 change of Schaeffer's? Keep using it for the life of the truck! Good choice on the SRT filter.

Well if it is not rated for the Specs Ram requires then there is a chance the could be denied warranty if there was an engine issue….

I recently bought a '22 6.4 & even though the dealer told me they "the required oil into it", I still dumped it out & changed it in a parking lot before the road trip home. Yes, I went to the dealership with the required 7 quarts of PUP SRT 0w-40 oil in my bag... lol

I sent a sample of that bad dealer oil in to a lab, to see if it's the PUP oil (which should be the same thing mopar sells you over the counter) & it wasn't even close. High levels of copper showed up in the bad oil after only 200 miles.

I'll see what PUP shows at 2.7k miles, but the reason to use the SRT oil is: 1. Doesn't void warranty, 2. You're less likely to lose the cam surface (from what I've been led to believe). & 3. Not all 0w-40 is the same. This motor can clatter on Porsche-spec oil but quiets right up on SRT-spec oil.

My recommendation is to skip the schaeffers oil. See if you can use it somewhere else or donate it to a local shop so it doesn't go bad. Oil is cheap.

Just my $.02, but I'm recommending 3,750 mi. Oil changes due to the 213° engine running temp & the fact that 0w-40 drops out of viscosity after 4k miles.

I've played with extended oil changes on 2, 2UZ-FE toyota engines & the legendary J35A4.

Learned my lesson. The maintenance minder & oil life indicator tools are still great & will work just fine with 3,750 mi. OCIs. You reset them at 80%/3,750 miles; & they just go back to 100%.

Good luck to you & don't sweat it. I love my truck & driving it makes my day, regardless what the haters say.
