Roll Up Tonneau Covers - Does More Money Equal a Better Cover?

I bought an Extang Revolution . Mainly because it takes up very little space in the bed so I don't have to worry about my 5th wheel hitch hitting it in tight turns . Also it does not use velcro to keep the side edges down and it is very flat and stays tight . I put 303 on it about once a month . I found on my last cover that the Velcro just didn't keep it tight after a couple of years .

I just sold my 2nd gen with a Revolution that while it was beginning to near end of life.....it gave pretty good service for almost 10 years. It wasn't waterproof by any means. I hope I don't regret my decision in not following suite. I wasn't a fan of the velcro thing but know a few people that claim it to work so figured I would give it a whirl.

I think they have improved the sealing because I get very little water inside the bed . I don't think any are 100% waterproof mainly due to tailgate and bed design

I have already started the return process on the Truxedo before it arrives. I will be getting the Revolution again. I liked the low profile, it latched well and lasted with little to no maintenance. Thanks for swaying me.....where were yah a cple days ago lol.

Let's beat this horse a bit longer....

Still torn on this whole tonneau thing. No soft cover is really secure. If they want in they will cut it. I didn't spend a lot on the last one (can't for the life of me think of what brand/model it is and don't have the truck here) and it has gone almost 10 years. It is super low profile and uses bars to clip into the side rails - no velcro. It is pretty much at the end of it's life however.

Do I do a roll up? I like the bed space if needed. Do I want to deal with frozen velcro or a PITA bar system? A trifold may be nice in that sense. I suppose I could just take it off if I need the entire bed.

The gator ETX is enticing with good reviews and stellar pricing.

I have a Lund Tri-fold and it is really nice until you want to haul something/damn near anything. The front 1/3rd of the bed is useless. I am constantly kneeling in the bed to reach whatever slid under the front of the cover, since you can't just roll it up a little further to get to the item. Taking it completely off is quick, but when you go to put it back on, you have to make sure you have it perfectly straight prior to tightening the clamps, otherwise it is off at the tailgate end once you flip it back. I am going to figure out a way to make little brackets that either allow me to hinge it up or at least make it land in the same spot every time you put it on the truck.

Bought and had delivered a TruXedo TruXport. Returning it to get the Extang Revolution that I had for the last 9 years. I should have followed my gut. That's why I eat well lol.

I don't even have the truck yet so I have time to get the right cover.

Can you get the Retrax Pro MX or Truxedo with the stake holes open?

I hate to think about how many Access tonneau Covers I've purchased in my lifetime. Every time I got a new truck (which is another story) I purchased a new Access tonneau cover. This time around as I price covers I'm seeing some really good reviews for roll up tonneau covers that are less than half the price of both Access and Truxedo covers. One of these is the Gator ETX at $219 from Amazon. I want something that will withstand hot summers and well below zero winters. I've always had good luck with Access, but if I can get a comparable cover for a much lower price (and better warranty!) I'd just as soon put that money into some other type of accessory. Thoughts?
Got the Bak
  1. BAK Revolver X4 and it is tight, long lasting and performs great on New 3500 HO Duelly https://bakindustries.com/revolver-x4

My decision to go with a hard cover was about security. Yes I know a lock only keeps an honest man out and if a thief wants in your truck, they'll eventually get in.

However, my daughter is a high level athlete and at any given time she can upwards of $3k worth of gear in her bag. We travel all over the country so my way of thinking is to make it as hard as possible for anyone to see or get to our stuff.

The soft tops are really nice, but inviting to someone with a knife and bad intentions. I'm hoping the hard top just makes them look for an easier target.

Although, to quote John Travolta, "It'd be worth them breaking into my car as long as I catch the MF'r while they're doing it." (Pulp Fiction)

To answer my own question now that I have the truck - there are NO stake holes with Ramboxes anyway! But there are adjustable tie downs on rails in the truck box.
