Reverse Issue

I have a 2022 Cummins.

A handful of times, I’ve put the truck in reverse and hit the gas expecting to move, but the truck just revs like it is in park or neutral. The dash indicates I’m in “R”. Shifting back to park and then to reverse clears this up.

I’m assuming this is not normal behavior. Any ideas?

Not normal. What transmission do you have?

I’m not sure if HDs will do this but my Durango and my rebel would not shift into reverse if I had the door open. It would flash on “R” but wouldn’t actually be in gear. I had to shift back to park and then try again.

My Hemi 2500 does that to and scared me the first time.

Yeah, first time it happened I panicked because nothing was working how I expected it to. Thought I royally f’ed some critical process up… turns out the nanny sensors on the truck didn’t like what I was doing.

Wow ok, I don’t recall having the door opened but it is possible. If it happens again, I’ll check that.

You could always do the quick operational test and try it. If it does it then I think it would be safe to assume that’s your culprit. If not…. Then you could have some gremlins running around in there.

Happened twice to me, 22 ctd 2500. I believe both instances were when I started the truck from cold start and quickly went into gear (~15-20 seconds).

This is the same as my situation. I was moving the truck from one spot to another in the driveway.

Do you recall if your door was open or ajar?

You have a CTD, which uses transmissions with a physical shift linkage. The auto park feature that others (Hemi owners) are talking about isn’t possible on your truck, so the door ajar status doesn’t matter.

I may ask my dealer. Not sure though since it’s so intermittent, but it does seem like this is a thing since at least one other person with the same transmission has had the issue.

Any chance you hit the "transmission Limp Home Mode", according to the manual it says that if you hit this the tranny may only operate in certain gears..IMG_2356.jpg

I know for sure that my door was open when it wouldn’t move.
Two conditions have to be true for that to happen, it's a safety feature:
- the driver's door has to be open (door contact open) and
- the driver's seat belt has to be unbuckled
This is because stupid people got run over by their own truck.

Well, two conditions plus a few more- foot has to be completely off the brake pedal, and must be traveling slower than 1.1 mph (hardly a “slam the vehicle in park” situation).

If the vehicle is stopped and you want it to move, I'd say those two conditions are true, too. But yes, technically correct.

I was at our county recycle/trash point and I move my truck about 60’ or less from the main dump bin to the recycling bins. I hope in the truck and don’t buckle or shut the door as I’ve been doing for years with multiple trucks until this Ram.

Now I shut the door before moving.
