Reset my expectations?

I'm 1,800 miles in on my 2021 2500 6.4L and pretty frustrated, so I thought I'd at least see what's up in the forums. Generally it seems others aren't complaining as much or at all about these things, or at least not all at once. I'm coming from a 2016 1500 Big Horn and my only expectations were less features because I'm stepping down to a Tradesman but gaining capability for towing, nothing more. That said, maybe all 2019+ 2500/3500 6.4Ls are like this and I'm expecting too much, so... please set me straight if so.

Negotiable things, where maybe it's normal and I just need to deal...
  • Loud ticking on cold start, like more noticeable than the exhaust note. Sounds like what other's have posted or explained as lifter issues.
  • Gear changes are quite delayed. Going from park to reverse, reverse to drive, etc. seems to take multiple seconds, and I'll often start giving it gas thinking it's engaged but still seems to be working on the change, and sort of fades into the throttle I'm giving it.
  • The throttle response is insane, like I've just started waiting for really big gaps in traffic in order to turn in across lanes at this point.
  • When towing it often pulls great 1-2 then falls on it's face when going to 3rd, or sometimes on the 3-4.
  • Rear diff seems a bit sloppy or not properly mated, even though I babied it as directed in the break-in period. I often see this when going up hill, if I let off the gas for some reason and then back on, it'll delay a bit and then I typically hear a soft clunk from the rear. This alone wouldn't concern me too much but in the last couple hundred miles I've started hearing a slight howl when slowly decelerating, which actually was the tell when my 2016 1500's rear end started going out.
Non-Negotiable, I'll address with the dealer, just wanted to note my experience so far.
  • Back up camera has intermittently not worked, just all black when tapping on the icon or going in reverse. A key cycle seems to fix it.
  • Key fob intermittently stops working. This just started today actually, so I'll keep an eye on it. Parked and started walking away from the truck, hit lock on the fob, nothing. Tried a few more times, nothing. Locked it manually for time being. Came back and had to unlock it manually and panel said "Fob not detected" when attempting to start. Eventually the truck told me to press the start button with the fob, which worked. Got back home, worked fine.

I can't speak to all of your comments but there is a forum member who has a 2019 and had the gear shift problems like you describe. Not sure if there was a recall but they replaced his and it now works fine.

I can't remember what forum he posted on so I'm unable send you a link

definitely take it to the dealer none of those are normal. I have a 2020 power wagon and only issue is the known issue with the remote start. Mine does not tick from lifter but has an exhaust sound that some but mistake for a tick but it is a common issue on the 6.4 and RAM says it is not an problem.

Many guys have noted the ticking noise. Fortunately for me mine does not seem very loud. I would definite have the transmission issues checked. I don't experience any of that. Do you have the 3.73 or 4.10 and what weight are you pulling? I tow about 9k and the transmission shifts smoothly. I do tow with the tow/haul mode on. When not towing everything shifts smooth. The only issue sometimes is clunkyness with the MDS, it can make sounds or feel a bit jerky. Easily solved by engaging the gear limiter and setting it to 8th gear. Other than that I love the big Hemi. Very peppy off the line and fun to drive. Only downside is that she is a thirsty beast. With fuel prices on the way back up (hey lets cancel another pipeline while we are at it) it will be getting more and more painful at the pump. Good Luck!

I have the 3.73 and pull a 7,500lb travel trailer. Before this I had a 2016 1500 5.7 with the 3.92 rear end, rated for 10,500. Power wasn't really an issue, it just couldn't handle the sway (32' trailer), which the 2500 definitely fixes. I also use tow/haul mode when pulling and will set the gear limiter to 8 to disable MDS as well, both towing and not. Shifting seems the same either way, it just doesn't bog down and act odd with it off, I got pretty used to that with the 2016 as well. Mine is peppy off the line as well, once it realizes I've got the hammer down lol.

2019 2500 6.4/4.10 with 4200 miles. 1200ish towing.

None of those issues at all. Outside mds my truck is a fantastic thing to drive. I only put 10,500 behind it last year once but was smiling at the ease and comfort of hitting 53mph from a dead stop on a hill(in a monitored 45mph zone lol)

No doubt you need to visit the dealer and dropping that thing off.

2200 miles on mine and don't have any of the issues you're having. Good luck getting your issues resolved. I hate dealing with intermittent problems.

I have about 3000 miles on my 2020 and do not experience any of your issues, but I have not towed yet. Although there are times when I have to go through the remote start procedure twice because it doesn't start the first time.

I agree that the 2-3 shift just sucks. My A/C only gets to 56*-58* out of the vent. It was 45* the other day and I had the A/C on max cool and it took a pretty long time before I even felt that I needed to adjust the temperature up.

Made an appointment for Wednesday morning. Felt like I was at a fast food drive-thru, she said "anything else?" like 4 times. This should be fun. :-/

I made an online appointment with my dealer, their 2+ weeks out.

In my mind's eye, I can see them rolling their eyes now looking at the list of issues.

I do wish they would contact me to ask about the AC TSB I quoted so they could order the parts, but suspect they won't until they "inspect" the truck. Doesn't matter, that's not what the TSB says they need to do. I quoted the exact text of the TSB, "...if customer complains of..."

My 2019 6.4 with 4.10's had no delayed tranny engagement or felt weak on any shift. I have experienced the delay from reverse to drive in my 2017 Ford F250, it was not normal on that truck and I found it extremely annoying. So your ZF8 could have an issue, but I have not heard of this problem yet. I had none of the other issues you mention.
The biggest problem I know of, and I had, was the very poor AC performance, and it is supposed to be fixed in the 2021 MY so you should be good there.
I will say I have had a 2017 F250 6.2, then 2019 6.4 Hemi and now 2020 F250 7.3. The Hemi had the best tranny performance and general drive-ability out of the 3. The AC is why I traded it.
