Regens at alarming rate!

I just think it’s kinda odd that the older trucks had no problems except the hpfp exploding on some, and suddenly there are regen problems jumping up everywhere regardless of mileage or driving habits Reprogramming for the new fuel pump and factory programming on the newer trucks. Nothing explains why the air filter all of a sudden has to only be one part number from one vendor.

2022 3500 6.7 HO was running fine with occasional regens. I did the DPF sensor recall with ECU reflash about 10 days ago and it's now doing regens roughly every other day. CEL came on last Thursday and it was a P2459 code (DPF regen frequency), plus it's now sucking down the DEF at an accelerated rate. It's just one gawdamm thing after another with this POS!

I'd lemon law it but then I'd have to wait or find something else that will likely be as big of a POS. Geezuss, what a sh!tty world we have built for ourselves.

Aside from having the recall performed, have you changed anything on the truck recently? Where you fuel, any filter changes, etc? What engine air filter are you using currently?

D. None Of The Above.

I dropped by my dealership last Thursday and had a chat with the service manager/main tech about this. He suggested a new air filter which I swapped out that afternoon then took a long roundtrip to see friends. It regen'd every day I drove it (Friday going and Sunday returning) and sucked down a 1/4 tank of DEF, which it has never done on this trip I've taken many times in the last year. I replaced the air filter with the same MOPAR one from the dealership and nothing has changed.

Have you noticed a drop in your fuel efficiency at all? DEF consumption is a derivative of fuel consumption. The more fuel you burn, the more DEF you burn. The tricky part is that excessive fueling can happen both during normal engine operation and potentially during the regeneration cycle, since fuel is sprayed into the cylinder for regeneration during the exhaust stroke. Any sign of extra oil in your crankcase or signs of fuel in the oil?

Also, just so I have your info straight, your truck was regenerating more frequently before you switched air filters, and then the dealer installed a new air filter after the discussion you had?

What air filter was in place before the switch and after? Just curious…

Sure they installed the sensor - and correctly so? Wire routing off hot exhaust, etc.

with ECU reflash
I have heard a few stories about updates being done by the dealer and then things do not work correctly. At one of my oil changes, they updated without telling either before or after. Fortunately no issues from it though. At the next oil change I directly asked them not to update and software. They acted like they would never do it unless a customer asked for it! I guess if a recall requires an update, there is no choice. But an update just because there is an update is something I would try to avoid if my truck was working fine, and the update was not specifically required for something.

That was my biggest concern about doing the latest emissions recall. These people and their government overseers can't seem to get anything right.

Nothing noticeable in fuel efficiency and nothing unusual about the engine oil.

The truck started the regen problem after the emissions recall work was done. After seeing the more frequent regens I replaced the factory filter with a new MOPAR filter as well as replaced the factory fuel filters with MOPAR ones 2 days ago. I just got back from a 70 mile roundtrip and it did another regen. I fully expect it to regen tomorrow or the the day after, and continue that pattern. Also, it threw a P2459 code which is "DPF Regen Frequency"

I did talk to my service guy at the dealership this morning and he's going to start the process of elimination of the possible causes next week. I'm pretty sure it's the reflash that went with the emission recall work. This POS has 15,000 miles on it and it's been nothing but garbage and problems since the day I drove it off the lot.

Yes and yes. My local dealership has a couple of very good techs who take a lot of pride in their work. Unfortunately, the main tech, who's also the service manager, is probably leaving because the should-have-retired-a-long-time-ago owner is such an a-hole. Dang, I hate to have this negative tone, but this vehicle experience is one nightmare after another.

Got mine back from dealer yesterday. They replaced injectors and said that fixed it. Picked it up and it regen’ed 19 miles from dealer ship.

I don’t know how you alls dealer operates but mine idles the truck while they do the updates. Keep track of your idle hours when you take it to the dealer. I told one technician that I caught doing that it’s in the manual to avoid excessive idling and he looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language.

They're supposed to put it on a tender and do that sh with the engine not running.

The last time I was at my selling dealership, my truck went into regen within a half a mile from the dealership. It had to have been warmed up enough to do that in that distance after we sat there for 3 hours. And they were reprogramming it for the turn signal in the tow mirrors.

AIR FILTER WAS THE ANSWER FOR ME (at least for now).

Situation: Replaced MOPAR air filter with Wix, after a while frequent Regen's. Have gone back to MOPAR and it appears to be working.

Details:
Regen at 113 miles and 4 hours (city driving)
Regen at 92 miles and 5 hours (city driving)
Two Regens at average 210 miles at 5 hours (this was highway driving)
Regen at 146 miles and 7.5 hours (city driving) *** I replaced the Wix Air Filter with Mopar about 19 miles into this drive ***
Currently at 423 miles at 22.5 hours and still have not Regen'd. (mostly city driving still with some highway)
NOTE: I am driving until the Regens finish now as well.

Hope this helps anybody else, and hope it is the permanent answer for me :)

Did the Wix have the glue strips?

My truck regens every 40 miles. Had it to a few dealers . Different dealers say different filters. I have had many expensive parts replaced. Lucky I have extended warranty. Nothing works . They they just guess. I have spent months down with this truck. Ram needs to step up on this issue.

There is no way that those 2 glue beads should cause that much restriction. I’ve seen trucks before 19+ models with the filter completely black with gunk on them and they had zero problem. I’ve seen people run them until they got a CEL and never have Regen issues. Has anyone tried disconnecting the ram air scoop on top of the radiator, having the air intake going straight in to the side of the air box? I know I get a lot of bugs in mine from it. I’m wondering if all of the shutters and stuff behind the grill is causing some kind of turbulence in the air system? But it seems to be the programming in the ECM as some who didn’t have any problems before having updates done on their trucks are now having issues. I still think it is some of the “Greenie” emissions updates without reengineering the system to make them work.
