Regens at alarming rate!

Dodgeman, yes it's best to loosen the big hose clamp and slide the rubber elbow back, then work the box cover out.
Thank you Steve49. That did the trick. Turns out I have the 53034501AB in my 2022 3500 HO (built in March 2022). A call to the local dealer with my VIN also came up with that as the correct replacement. I don’t think I’m having the frequent regen problem. I happened to catch an “automatic” regen in progress. I had never paid any attention before. Since then, the truck DPF has stayed between 20 to 30% (about 250 miles, mostly highway).

Correct. I posted that information here previously. I have a whole thread on the air filter problem here:

Just an FYI, I replaced air filter with correct one - this dealer was aware of the issue. But, there was also flash for the overactive regens which I didn't expect. Last flash I received was CP4 swap.

Did they give you any sort of software update number or work order that would identify which upload they flashed?

I had another thread about this, but for my 2022 HO, the dealer found an exhaust leak via a gasket (not sure which one). They beleive that is causing the frequent regens (and based on a quick Goole search, that could be true). Luckily they had the gasket in stock and I'll get the truck back tomorrow. Might be something to look into for those of us dealing with this.

Mine has been in twice since my last post. It's had the EGR replaced and is on it's second STAR case. It's in the shop again having everything from the turbo back replaced. It's been in the shop for 2 and a half weeks so far this time for a total of 21 days out of the last 3 months. I sent an oil sample out before it went in to see if the EGR helped the fuel in oil in the 400 miles I had it before the light came back on and I took it back

That’s crazy. I can’t wait to hear the final outcome.

So my dealer, as we all know, says this is common issue and that Ram needs to (i) determine what the cause of all this actually is and (ii) issue a recall or the like as eventually this will cause engine, turbo, exhaust, etc. problems which will be much more expensive for both Ram and the dealerships. @RamCares

He warned me that the issue may very well come back in 10-15k miles.

Yep, didnt work for my truck. Got the truck back Friday. Drove it a mix of city/highway miles (maybe 50 in total) and it did 2 active regens, one Saturday and one Sunday.

I am also experiencing frequent regens and don't have a good answer from the dealership. I just purchased a 2022 Ram 2500 at 16,000 miles. I took a long 3,000 trip with a trailer and didn't notice the issue then as I wasn't focused on regens. I believe it is getting worse though, most recently I went into another regen after 40 miles, primarily highway. I happened to be taking my truck in to the dealership for a steering wheel issue and spoke to them about it. They said Ram doesn't know what the issue is yet, but apparently are maybe trying to figure it out? I did look at my air filter and I have a Wix filter. I ordered the Fleetguard and am hopeful I get the right one from Amazon. If this doesn't help, I may replace the differential pressure hoses myself next.....trying to do it in steps for process of elimination. Mostly posting so I can keep up on any results that come in this thread! I moved up from an EcoDiesel and so far this truck has unexpectedly had more issues than that one! Thanks all!

Guys I would be looking at doing a oil change to Shell Rotella T6 5w-40, I was using Valvoline 10w-30 that cummins has on there website and only got about 5000 miles on it before starting to have crazy regens. change my oil back to T6 and my regens have went back to normal. maybe its just a one off deal but look at your miles on your oil and not the dash meter. Hope this helps. I had no codes I was just watching with a iDash.

Interesting. This would make sense in my situation as the dealership (Ford dealership) did an oil change and air filter change before they sold it to me around 3-4,000 miles ago.

So getting my truck back today, 5th time in the shop in about 2 months. Dealer, in colloboration/communication with Ram, ran a bunch of tests (dont know which ones) and noted that everything came back fine, but that upon a test drive in city traffic, the truck was still loading the DPF in an abnormal way. Based on the comment about oil change above, went ahead and had them change the oil at least to the Mopar brand. Last oil change was at a Goodyear place, which I've used for years but likely will not use for this truck again. This truck seems to tempermental to let anyone but Ram work on it.

Keep us posted. Would like to know if it helps your truck also.

@jasmith348 I run Amsoil in mine and have since I first bought it new 5/21. First oil change was at 4k miles. I am oil crazy, so it rarely sees 4-5k before changing, more frequent lately with all the issues. My problems didn't start until 19k miles. Truck is still in the shop starting on the 4th week. Service writer agreed with me when I said there is no guarantee this will resolve my issue and not just band aid it as STAR is basically throwing parts at it. They just received the parts and will test (drive it while not registered) it next week. Even if it's resolved it will need 1500-2000 miles before it can be smog'd. To really rub salt on it Enterprise put me in a '23 Cummins that regen'd twice in 3000 miles while I had it for our trip.

Changing the air filter seems to have made a pretty big difference for me so far. Went from regenning every 40 miles to 150 miles in between the last one (mixed city/hwy). This second one seems to be doing even better but I will keep monitoring for a while. Not sure what should be normal but I would hope for closer to 300, but the trigger seems to be around 50% full so I don’t think I will ever get there.

That’s good. Hasn’t helped me yet. Mine will auto regen after about 25 miles of mixed city/highway driving. Honestly seems to be worse since the dealer put the new dpf, gaskets and catalytic converter on it. It’s basically doing it everyday at this point. In about 2 weeks it will get a workout pulling the 5th wheel. Hoping that helps the computer or whatever sort itself out.

There is a significant amount of weekly reporting of this issue. Primarily centered on 2022 model year trucks, but some other model years also. It is absolutely something that Ram engineering needs to take a serious look at.
